Hello. About to clear a couple trees in my back yard, in preparation for a long road of building a long desired shop. Joined up so I can document the progress, as well as hopefully gain insight as the project progresses. I have a little bit of experience, having helped my dad build a shed, and a music studio, as well as rebuilding my house after a fire in 01/2013. I want a shop (man cave) that can be used for metal fab, woodworking, car work, as well as storage...basically a tinkering around area for me. Thinking 24x40 for dimensions as of right now. I intend on doing any work I can myself.

SS: may i suggest that you build the garage/man cave as big as you can afford. Almost everybody has said this on their threads that they always wish they could have built a bigger garage if they could afford to. can you post a few pictures of your potential area for your shop and the trees that you are cutting down so you can practice posting pictures?

good luck and sounds like you'll do fine with your new project. documenting and posting lots of pictures in the garage gallery like others have done might get you a following so if you have questions you'll likely get some good answers.

welcome

I'm from just up the road in Brewton

Ps. Don't call it a man cave. Just a preference. But many here agree.

My preferred term would be "shop", but it is what it is...it'll be my area that my brothers, dad and friends go to hang and work. I have 3 daughters that I have custody of and I am married...my wife is the one who says it'll be my man cave...probably because of the testosterone that will fill the entire area at all times.

Thanks for the advice. I will start taking pics once the trees come down. I do not have a huge yard so space is a concern, but I believe it will be fine as long as I stay within reason. My wife thinks anything larger than 24x40 is going to be too big for our yard, but I have been telling her to just wait until the trees are down and we can mark it on the grass so she can see it. I think 32x40 is probably the biggest I'll go because I want to have a little bit of a driveway in front of the building. I may end up also moving part of my privacy fence as well. There are an awful lot of questions that need to be answered but I have plenty of time. My build will probably take me 2 years I'd imagine, considering it'll be just me a vast majority of the time doing all of the work.

SS: thanks for the information. feel free to ask questions if you have any either here or on one of our many threads that might be talking about the same issues.

sounds like a great plan and get it on paper and staked because always good to have your wife on board with the plan if you can.
