Background - grew up working on leogs/bikes/RC's/Cars and sometimes had a garage, mostly not. A couple jobs I had in the past we had a shop so I gained some shop knowhow there - including mills, sheetmetal tools, punches, grinders, presses - ah the work was quick and precise.
Else at home we've not had the space for tools, or the garage was 3 levels down and there was no storage - so needed to be portable. Got used to stashing heavy items in the trunk of my car, and the rest went back in the apartment.
This summer we moved to an apartment with deck and a 32sf closet. No electrical inside. I talked to the landlord before moving in that I "build stuff" and got the rules - drill ok, table saw not. And be quiet.
So finally this thanksgiving break - had time to allocate to start on "the shop". Compressed the stuff we had in there - and jettisoned some items to Goodwill. The remainder organized into a few boxes and then proceeded to cram and fill every nook and spot to make best use of the space - even between the 2x4's - as the inside has bare walls.
As for economy - being this is not an approved project by the committee (wife) I opted to see how far I can get with materials on hand - thus the 2x4's mounted on a moving trolley and some plywood I found for the workbench base. Pegboard - nope - used scrap 1x4 and some old nails. For the top I picked up a 4x6 today, cut into 3 30" pieces - glued and then will threaded rod it together - see if that large mass will adequately dampen hammer blows (will sit on top of the tool trolley - need to cut down the 2x4's and add some rubber/cork blocks so make it quieter.
It's nice to finally have a space to work.. All 16 square feet.
