Newbie here who recently epoxied floor

Over the years the garage filled up with "stuff" to the extent I had to move my garage kept 93' fox body 5.0 mustang that I've had since HS (22-yrs) into the sun so my wife could store more things we don't use. After a year zig zagging around junk I hate and knowing my baby was baking in the sun it was time to take control of the space.



Step one was to empty it so a POD was ordered.



Next scrape the falling popcorn and put a nice knockdown.

Next I wanted a nice floor coating and got so far as to put a Home Depot water kit in my cart before realizing I needed to read up more. So glad I did and so glad I found this forum. Settled on a 4-coat from Garagecoatings.com. The prep began and product arrived via 18-wheeler.


Chased and filled cracks

Washed floor several times, epoxied & flaked stem walls, and put down their 4100 primer coat (thick, great stuff).

Epoxied and flake water heater stand, and $3 black paint job on the water heater tank because why not.

Rolled epoxy & flaked to rejection.

Two top coats of clear (5205 & 5073)

It's done and I'm so glad I did it. Not gonna lie I had no idea what this would take in cost time and effort. Glad I didn't because it may not have gotten done.

This forum was so helpful and I thank all who shared their experience. Next on the agenda is a 60" husky mobile tool chest (on the way), get the mustang home, and build a golf simulator.

You did a nice job! Allthough I'm a Chevy guy, the Mustang looks great. Must be a real sense of accomplishment when you finally rolled it into the garage.

There have been mixed reviews about the Versatile Building Products epoxy on GJ. How long have you had yours down? How is it holding up? Anything you would do differently?

There have been mixed reviews about the Versatile Building Products epoxy on GJ. How long have you had yours down? How is it holding up? Anything you would do differently?

This was my first epoxy floor and it's only been down a week. So I can't compare it to anything - just glad I didn't accidentally go water based from a box store unknowingly. I'll put a reminder to do a follow up in a year bc I'm sure all floors are nice week one. If I did it over I'd probably hire it done. The quote I received to have it done I thought was high, then I probably spent that much in materials & tools and drug the job out forever (have a toddler). Great experience though and I'm happy. As far as the product I have absolutely no complaints other than the topcoat I bought went on sale the next day and they didn't give me the small difference, and the squeegee frame I ordered did don't hold a squeegee and customer service was no help. Small qualms in big picture. The garage is my favorite room in the house now. Thanks really to this great forum and wealth of knowledge I learned lurking.

Thanks. I did document progress and thought it was funny that I had to meet a FedEx 18-wheeler at a truck stop bc it was a "freight" delivery and my house is on a cul de sac.

You could've hired someone to do it, but I've always thought when you do something yourself there's a sense of accomplishment and I'm sure you'll enjoy your space more since you put the work in yourself...the whole "basking in the fruits of your labor" thing! Great job though!

You guys are completely right. The sense of accomplishment and experience going forward were priceless and I really have no regrets. Really wouldn't do it differently. It's a nicer floor then I ever imagined. To the question of what would I do different, the only thing I can think of is it would have been faster to hire it done since I spent 2-months educating myself thoroughly on the process and then had to fit it into work and family schedules that happened to be weekend days over 50* and under 80% humidity (rare for January in FL). That actually made the success even sweeter though. Anyway thanks for reading. I thought contributing was only fair after reading everyone else's story to complete my job. Cheers!

Haha! Yep! I better invest in a magnet. Lost a nut off my spiked shoes during install. Found it stuck to the epoxy next day.

NWFL in the panhandle, where the traffic isn't as bad. You're exactly right, thunderstorms cut many days short and waiting for low humidity was the hardest part. Worth it.

To be fair I didn't know I'd be doing the floor when I started cleaning out the garage. A lot of time was spent researching and learning on the fly. If I was doing it over I could prep one weekend and lay the floor the following. Reading about floors failing led to lots of extra prep.
