Newbie in MI - looking for basic information

Hello all. I'm new to the board and looking to obtain as much information as possible and hopefully provide some contributions down the road.

I'm planning to move to a more rural area within the next year and plan to build a separate structure to house my cars. I'm thinking about a 24-28 X 40-42 size. I've been lurking on this site for a while and there is some great information here but I need to find more basic information for formulating a solid plan. Can anyone point me to a good resource for estimating some of the basics such as cost (for slab, structure, etc.), financing options, permits, etc.? I would like to start on building the garage as soon as I buy the house - would I have to pay for the garage in cash or are there financing options out there (assuming I put 20% down I doubt a home equity loan would be an option)? I'm bugeting $20k to get the structure built - is this enough? I need some guidance where to start....

Welcome to the board. If you use the search function you can see some of the many posts. Code issues and cost are relative to where in rural Michigan you build. In agricultural areas you will have little issues, in the “country suburbs’ you may have more issues. Cost is relative to size and what you want done or will do yourself.

If you go to Menard's they have a computer thing for buildings. You punch in the size and options and it tells you the kit price. I think it used to be the price of materials was the same as the price of labor. I don't know anymore.
