I just got some old tool boxes and an old saw from my grandpa and I'm looking for some info, stories, or advice on what to do with them. The tool boxes are Matco. The bottom is a roll away 8 drawer Model # MB920. The top does not have a model number. I did a Google search and the top is the same as a picture I found. It has 10 drawers and the top opens.

The saw is a worm drive Skil Saw Model # 825. I found a thread on here where guys said it was pretty nice. Its an 8 1/4" blade. My grandpa said it does need new brushes, though. It looks like it's in pretty good shape. It even came in what looks like the original metal box that is formed for the saw. It looks like an old metal tool box.

Here are some pictures...

I just started repairing the boxes that's why the top two drawers are out. I have some dents to bang out, locks to replace, rust to grind/ sandblast off, then I plan on painting them with Rustoleum truck bed coating from the rattle can.

Any help or comments/questions are appreciated.

Thanks guys,
Joe

Sweet boxes! Matco's have always been my favorite. Plus, passed down boxes are always cooler. I have my Snap-on boxes that are on their third generation.

Might I make one suggestion though? Skip the Rust-O bed liner. If you want to do bed liner coating, check out U-POL Raptor coating. They sell it in kits that come with a spray gun, and containers of the material that attach to the gun. A kit is $100. That includes the gun, hardener, and for bottles of spray. You'll have left overs. They sell it in black, and tintable. The tintable one you can mix paint with to make it match colors. A lot of the Jeep guys are into it, and works great. WAY stronger then the Rust-O spray paint, and after you buy enough cans of the Rust-O, you'll be close to the cost of the Raptor kits...

Good luck! :)

Very nice boxes. Your grandpa was a discerning guy.

FWIW, Unless they are going to see daily field use as road boxes, the bed liner spray may be overkill for home use.

Also, those boxes still have your grandpa's DNA in them. Your inheritance, but think about just cleaning, lubing the slides, wiping down with WD40 and use them as is for a while. You can always restore them anytime, but they're a survivor as is.

Hey guys thanks for the feedback. I gotta say, gramps didn't die. He's just now starting to let go of some of his junk (5 acres, 2 pole buildings, a barn, and a 2 car garage of junk haha) and I'm taking some of the finer things.

The boxes kind of need to be repaired now. Some of the drawers aren't working and such. Plus I love projects like this.

I am a Jeep guy so I do know about U-pol. I have something similar to it in my Jeep. I feel that will be a little too thick and rough. I've used the Rust-O on other projects and I like the little bit of texture.

I just got a sandblaster today to blast the boxes. Should be fun. I'll keep you updated and post pics

Thanks,
Joe
