Hello Garage Journal! I've been Googling most of the afternoon today looking for heating-A/C solutions for my new 28X36 pole barn with 9-foot ceilings. I've got insulation foam sprayed on the side walls, but ran out of money before tackling the roof. ' Hope to recover enough to do that before it gets too cold.
I'm here in SE Michigan - 'teens in the winter and 90s in the summer. A/C is a part of my long-range plan but hey, time is money, right? I need more time.
But I digress. This afternoon's search brought me to a very helpful thread here on the Garage Journal - but not quite addressing my specific needs. I'm an amateur car guy - but no painting or prep. I leave that to the guys who know what they're doing. I do most of the rest.
But I don't do it all the time. Sometimes two or three days pass before I get to the shop in the winter. Sometimes I make a last-minute decision to go out after lunch. I need a heating system that will heat up quick. 55 degrees is enough - much above that in long-sleeved coveralls and I'm sweating. No need to keep the shop up to temperature all the time - unless that's the cheaper way. Yeah - economy is important too.
We have natural gas to the house and I have a new 100-amp electrical panel at the garage (200 amp main box at the house). Believe it or not, some of my new neighbors tell me that electric is the cheaper way to go around here. I haven't compared rates, BTUs per unit of energy, and all that good stuff, so I don't know yet.
Any suggestions?
