Hi everyone just a quick question,

Im getting my 24x24 slab done for my garage this week. And i was wondering if its a good idea to get the raised edge around the walls. Im not 100% sure as to what its called: (Not mine, google pic)

My slab is already raised because my lot slopes. So its raised around 7 inches in the front and even more in the back. I asked my contractor and he said it depends if im going to be doing welding/washing inside the garage. I most probably will be doing some welding on my project cars but i dont see why its so important. I doubt doing some welding on 1 car will allow sparks etc to go under the sill plate and burn the garage down.

Thoughts?

Perimeter curb, stem wall, etc., are usually a good idea in my opinion. If you spill something in your garage, whether it be water, oil, or something else, having a concrete curb is very nice. Makes it easy to pressure wash the Garage. Keeps wood and siding further off the ground. Makes is slightly more difficult for creep crawly things to get in.

The good - as noted, keeps framing members well up from the ground and from any water spills inside. Also adds a bit of head room. My dad's garage had a stem wall. The bad - more work should you decide "hey, I could use a door there...". Or, you use a step inside and out. All depends on local conditions. Here on flat land we pour on grade and shoot for 4~6" clear of grade at the finished level. House garages here look like they have a stem wall on the inside, but the parking area is just lower than the rest of the house slab by about the width of a 2x4.
