Newbie Question

Hey all,
Ive been lurking the forum for awhile now while i build my tool box. I didnt see an intro section so please forgive me if my first post isnt supposed to be here.

My question to you all is, Is it better to use impact sockets with a torque wrench or are regular Cman sockets just fine?

manual torque wrenches can be used with Cr-V sockets. When people use hand tools to break away a fastener, and break away torque is almost always more than initial torque, I don't see any reason why you would hesitate to use normal Cr-V sockets.
Adaptors, reducers are definitely not recommended. Use impact sockets if you "feel" its safer.
impact sockets are recommended for torquing using manual/pneumatic torque multipliers.

Note: everything what i have said is my thoughts, yours can differ.

I see no reason to use an impact socket with a torque wrench, but when using a torque wrench, I usually use the socket that is handy, which might be an impact socket.

I use chrome generally. They say impact sockets are soft and deform over time. Pry bar size? The 3 piece Craftsman set will cover most all your needs. Almost everyone on this forum owns a set of these bad boys.

Any sockets for torque wrench.

RE : prybars -- you need little ones for small things and large ones for big things...what size stuff are you gonna work on? .....I use 'em all up to 36" long striking type.

I don' think there is need / requirement. Torquing something to set level is not a pounding / impact kinda job which will be too hard on a chrome socket. Any chrome socket should take reasonable levels of torque that might apply to that size fastener. Before I spent the money on good sockets, I got by torguing stuff in the 1 1/2" / 1 3/4" socket size up over 600 ft lbs when assembling / rebuilding industrial vacuum compressors with even cheapo no-name chrome sockets.....I did split a few and tossed em out...but if they didn't actually break, then I had not doubt it made the torque value required.....nothing ever flew to pieces on me....

I know the difference between impact gun and torque wrench. It is my understanding that you use impact sockets with a breaker bar so i was just curious if that transferred over to torque wrenches.

You can use chrome or impact sockets interchangeably with hand tools. It makes no difference which one used where and when.

Size to size chrome is stronger than impact for linear torque. Use Chrome on breaker bar. Impact is for just that...impact hammer.

I'll bet I worked wrenching for living for the first 10 years with only impacts for 1/2 drive...I only bought the chromes when I got well established in most other tool areas that I use more of and it was convenient....really just for those rare occasions where thinner sidewall of chrome makes a difference.

Depends on what you're torquing. If it's not super critical such as with engine accessories and lug nuts. Then either should be fine. When things get critical such as with heads, rod and main caps, and a torque angle meter is involved, then only a high quality chrome socket of the Snap On variety should be used. Along with a quality torque wrench of course.

CrMo sockets are only necessary in high torque applications, we use hydraulic torque wrenches at work for larger fasteners and they are impact socket only, crv can explode under enough load but with a hand torque wrench you will unlikely ever exceed crv capabilities.

Impact sockets are often/usually thicker walled than chrome sockets and as such won't always fit the same places that a chrome socket can.

Before the powerful impact guns came out we busted a lot of impact sockets using breaker bars for field service. 3/4 to 7/8 size. Our 1/2 chrome sockets were 12-point so we thought Proto impact sockets should work.They didn't

As long as they fit, the impacts are thicker, then they are interchangeable except for one application. You shouldn't use the chrome sockets on your impact gun.

"You shouldn't use the chrome sockets on your impact gun." Many times you can't find the impact socket and will grab the chrome one for the impact gun. This will work in low impact settings but if continued the chrome sockets will get beat up and eventually may fracture. Once broken they are no good.

Sockets in normal use can break. Get new ones and maybe get some of higher quality.

Pry bars? I have a bunch.
