Hi everyone, I am getting ready to start building a 28x30 pole building garage. I am going to use 6x6x16 posts concreted 4 feet deep in the ground. I have two questions: is 4' deep adequate depth for the posts (8' or less apart)? and I was just recently told that I shouldn't concrete them but instead pack dirt back around the post because the concrete would rot the post, is this true?
Thanks in advance. This is a great site.

I had a 30x50 put up a few months ago and they put the posts in 3ft and packed the dirt. I was told the concrete would rot the posts also. I also had a lot of rock which keeps them from sinking but not knowing where you are and soil conditions you may have to pour concrete in the bottom of the hole for the post to set on.

Set the post ON concrete and NOT in concrete. Sitting on the concrete allows for water to escape from around the post. Sitting in concrete will not allow the water to escape. Some places sell concrete pads (I think someone else has posted recent pics of this) that goes into the bottom of the hole for the post to sit on. Once a building is built, the post do not shift at the bottom anyhow. All the hole is for is to keep the complete building from shifting. All that the bottom of the hole is for is to keep it from sinking. All the dirt is for around the post is to hold it up straight until you get your other boards fastened. Post some pics of your progress:thumbup:

Why cut them off, why not have 12ft. side walls. Do you plan on a lift, higher is better.

Thanks for the replies. I have to cut them off at ten feet because of some local ordinance. The garage is going in the front yard and they wouldn't let any higher than 10'. I did most of the excavating today and will get some pics tomorrow.

you should always put post in ground 10% of length plus 2feet. and definately pour concrete in bottom to sit them on. Jimmy

I'm going to pour about 6" of concrete in the bottom of the post holes to set the posts on. Then I will pack dirt back around the posts instead of concrete. I'm also going to see if I can get a wood sealer that is specially made for wood that is being placed underground. If not I might coat the underground portion of the 6x6 with tar.
Having problems getting the pictures from the digital camera to the computer so hopefully tonight I'll have some pictures up.

Post setting depth depends on frost depth. Where I live it is in the 36"-42" range so we design foundations so they are 48" below grade. Local code is going to require that you go at least as deep as the local frost depth design standard. The building department can tell you what that is.

There are a few schools of thought on the concrete vs. no concrete method for setting a wood post.

Concrete:
- More Stable
- Concrete holds water against the post and doesn't allow for drainage.
- May be code requirement in your area.

No Concrete:
- Allows for water to drain around posts.
- Less expense.

If you go with soil, pack washed gravel at the bottom of each hole before setting the posts - it keeps each post from sitting in water all of the time. I would also use soil that doesn't have any organics in it. Top soil, black dirt, etc. don't have any structural qualities. You'll eventually regret using that kind of soil for backfill.
