First ever project after I bought my welder. It is a Hobart handler 140. Never weld before, just learned from watching youtube and now just starting to practice. It is not much and my welds are too embarrassing to show. But here is the progress so far.

My little welder.

Start of project. The base.

More progress.

Almost there. Still a few things left to do. Putting wheels on, make base for welding tank, make handles for the cart, clean up and grind some welds and prep for paint (rattle can).

It looks like you're off to a good start -- and everybody starts somewhere. A welding cart is one of the first "fabrication" projects I made after I bought a welder. Don't forget to post the pics when finished.

If you plan on putting your welder on that angled shelf, you might want to consider putting small plate or tube gussets on the joint. Get creative with them. Over bumps that is going to be a heck of a moment load on that joint. Good start.

Put real wheels on it not some 2"casters that won't roll across your driveway outside.Good wheels will bail you out when you move it.

Thanks a lot guys. And thanks for the advice. I will definitely look into getting some gussets for the shelf. I have slightly larger wheels than 2" and if I happen to need better wheels, then that would have to be something to change in the future.

Still need to add J hook for welding cables and helmets. And now fabricating some gussets for the shelf. Then will need to prep for paint. Will post finish project.

I move every 2.5-3 yrs. No choice.
I see some of your welds. Looks fine to me. Just know that I envy you. I want a welder too but I have too many items that I want before the welder.

Looks like youtube has taught you well

^^^ I have swivel casters on my mig cart and like it. In tight quarters it's nice to be able to push/pull the cart in any direction.

Thanks, but there is quite a bit of grinding to get it cleaned up. hahaha. Getting the hang of it, welds are getting better.

zkling, thanks for mentioning gussets, I totally forgot about it. But I did put some on.

Almost there, got it cleaned and threw on some primer. Just waiting for it to dry and then will paint it.

Looking better all the time.

When I made mine, I wanted to have the handle sticking out like on your cart so it would be easy to turn but it seemed like it would be in the way when changing out the tanks. I ended up making a handle that would slide down into the uprights that I could remove when I needed to. Not exactly the best solution, but it works.

Thanks. Yea the handle is in the way, but I don't do enough work to constantly remove the tank. So this works for me.

Finally done with the clean up and paint.

How everything looks on the cart.

Looks good. I like that it's not black.

Good job on that cart!

That's a great job, especially since it is your first welding project! (... and probably many more to come.)

A really nice job! you don't have anything to be embarrassed about. You should get many years of use from it and will remember the project each time you use it. Good work and good luck Jeff
