I am getting ready to build a 42"X50" pole barn on a relatively flat lot. I was wondering what the proper steps are in getting this project started. Do I need to have a surveyor come out and stake it out? I would like to have a few things in place before going to the contractors and getting estimates. The post frame builders in this area mostly just do construction and not the pre-build site prep. I am glad there are forums like this out there to get ideas rather than learn the hard way. Thanks

Step 1 find out what codes you may have to adhear to and permits you may need, are there set back requierments or hight restrictions. Some places don't require anything others require a board review with drawing and fees. Were I live in TN I had a setback requirement off of the property line and a square footage maximum of under 1000sqft before it became a commercial building.
Step 2 find out what the contractors requiements are for the site preperation, the may have to inspect the site to let you know what will need to be done in advance of the construction, such as finding any gas lines or underground utilities.
