Hello everyone,

I am new here, I have been looking at some threads for a few months, but just joined. I recently (ok October of 2011) bought a brand new house and one of my wish list items was a three car garage, I quickly figured out that was out of my price range and all but wrote off the possibility of getting one. Then I finally found a great floor plan that was in my budget and it had a two car tandem garage, I was happy to say the least. I have not painted it yet, Im hoping to get to that next year (mid-2013) and maybe do a floor coating of some kind... I have put some temporary shelving for now, built a work bench (came out way too high) and some peg board for hand tools/miscellaneous items.

I will post up dimensions when I get them, but I think its about 20'x15' long on the tandem side, and a "regular" two car garage in front of the tandem.

Here are a few pics I have from moving day, I will update soon.

EDIT: Photobucket seems to be down, check back for pics....

Looking in from door.

One outside pic I have, ignore the Neon, its long gone now. LOL

Alright, Im finally back, I just measured out the garage and it is as follows:

Total length on tandem side: 37'-6"
Tandem width: 12'-6"
Tandem depth: 18'
Two car width: 18'-6"
Two car depth: 19'-6"

So I was a little generous on my previous guess.

I also took some current photos to get up to speed, this is a low budget work in progress for now... I hope to pay down some debt and then start some upgrades in the next year or so.

I will post them up shortly.

This is the regular two car portion...

The two car portion has a nice tall ceiling so I took advantage of this and built a heavy duty storage shelf.

2012-09-23_11-30-31_232_zpsae48121f.jpg

This is the other side, Im probably going to build a second/identical shelf here as well.

2012-09-23_11-30-49_508_zpse3984ad4.jpg

This is the RH wall under under the future shelf area... It has a nice "pocket" where I added a few shelves, you can also see my main electrical panel and sprinkler system control panel.

2012-09-23_11-31-05_996_zps39f930b8.jpg

In front of that starts the "tandem" portion of the garage, I have a small section here where the ceiling is dropped, so I use it to display some of my signs and what not. You can also see the door into the house...

(RH side)

(LH side)

2012-09-23_11-31-57_617_zps47b2f6f6.jpg

This the back wall of the tandem portion, I built a work bench (that ended up too high ) and used peg board to organize items... to the left is the man door to the back yard and more shelving.

2012-09-23_11-32-35_767_zps261f3617.jpg

And the LH corner has more shelving and a large window, not ideal for me, but nice for light and air flow...

BigBubba, Thanks, I like it, I wish I had something larger but this was a good compromise on my budget. At least I can get all three vehicles in for the winter!

Great space. Lots of potential. You should consider some soffit storage or wall cabinets along the top of the wall in the back. Nice Camaro. Used to have a 95 myself!

n2ocamaro, Thanks man, I enjoy the space, I would love to do over head or full length cabinets along the side wall (by the work bench) and redo the work bench for more storage and a better working height. Hopefully Ill get to that in the year or so...

Thanks I love it, I recently got my 17" ZR1's, SFC's and what not... hoping to get a tune and headers next...

Hi All,

Sorry I havent updated this thread, I really havent been able to do much more to the garage, life/budget/work/family got in the way... I have been using the garage a lot though and love the room it offers.

Anyway, I have put more shelving, and I installed a second over head shelf that matches the first. (Cant seem to find a pic right now) I also picked up some bolt bins from a local hardware store that was replacing them with new. I put up a sheet of plywood (to the studs) and then put up the bins spaced down the wall. I use them for all my misc screws, bolts and what not.

Recently I have working on the house, needed to build a platform for the washer/dryer. (They sat really low since they are front loaders) I used some 2x12's and made two platforms, they needed to be different depths due to my dryer vent location. I also thought they would be too long/wide and heavy to move in/out in one piece, I bolted them together once in the room. I used some extra linoleum that came with the house to cover the top for water protection and appearence.

Next I started making some planter boxes for the front of the house. I used 2x2 Redwood for the frame and standard 1x6 cedar fence pickets for the exterior/floor. The top cap is 1x4 cedar pickets. I am going to make more for the back yard, but they will be a different style.

Here are some pics for now.

Almost done, needs the floor and top cap.

Thanks so much, the planter box definetly took way more time than I had planned and I still need to build another one to match...

I am glad I decided to build two smaller ones rather than one large one, this one is already heavy enough and its not even filled up yet... This pic is from when we bought the house, but I am putting them in the rock bed on the right hand side centered in front of my basement window. Now I just need to rip out the bushes and plants that the builder put in.

I finally got a pic of the dual HD shelves I built, plan on doing two more over the garage door for more storage.

Not really garage related, but I installed the planter boxes with their own water mister lines lastnight. I still need to rip out the last bush and add one more drip line, but almost there.

Another update, I finally completed the planter boxes, set up the sprinklers and had the woman plant all her flowers... then I turn on the sprinklers to find out only one works, the others just barely dribble out any water, so I need to look into that next...

I also starting working on the sprinkler system for the backyard, my house had no landscaping done in the back due to it being new construction and my lack of funds to pay for it to be done by the builder. :(

Dug out a trench for the wiring, I am installing a separate box in the back for the rear system, but my controller wiring was already ran to this box. I just needed to extend the wiring so I can control the additional zones.

I did manage to work in the garage some and hung up another shelf like my other two. I did build a 4th shelf, just didnt get to the installation yet.

Nice work on the planter boxes and the drip line. I hate working on the sprinklers - never enough room in the valve boxes. Good idea running the wire for the new valves through the PVC.

Thank you, they were a pain to get right and both to match! :)

I agree, I hate working on sprinklers as well, still need to run the wiring the rest of the way to the back (I ran out of pipe and wire) and then start on the water lines... not looking forward to all that digging.

Thanks, I thought it best to run the wiring in the PVC for protection and ease of maintainence. If I ever need to replace or add wiring I can fish it through the pipe and not have to dig up the finished yard. (hopefully I will never have to touch it again once its up and running).

Update time:

Sorry I haven't been posting, it was a busy fall... I finally gathered up enough cash to finish my back yard after 3 years of ownership. The house was purchased new, so it did not have any of the rear landscaping. I finished up the sprinkler install, then set all my fence posts in the ground.

Next up was getting my patio extended and a side walk poured.

IMG_20140901_165611365_zpsnzyot8tn.jpg

IMG_20140901_165605409_zpss3elamcx.jpg

And of course I had to dig out and bury the gutters so that I could have the concrete poured... I did not want gutters crossing the sidewalk, drives me crazy...

20140903_155737_zps6wjb7oqh.jpg

2014090395155728_zpsaze7tekz.jpg

Then I made an "enclosure" for the utilities, I wanted to try to hide them a bit more and keep people out of the area. I built a landscape timber "frame" around it first, then landscape fabric/mulch and finally built a short fence.

Unfinished in this pic:

IMG_20140913_182421467_zpsns0psqif.jpg

For the next phase, I roto-tilled the yard, added fertilizer and then roto-tilled again before grading it all out. After that I installed about 1200 sq ft of sod and finished up the fences and gate.

I have also been working on upgrading the flooring in the house as well, it came with carpet and vinyl everywhere and I am sick of looking at it.

I started with the main entry way/closet, it was a terrible cheap vinyl floor and a tiny piece of carpet for the closet itself... I purchased some laminate/swift lock flooring and put that in place of the vinyl. I think it came out nicely, I just need to do something with the trim.

Im back again, I have sold the previous house and moved into a new to me house (built in 2014). The new home is a 20' x 30' three car garage, the driveway *****, but this is the one that worked out the best for our situation.

The garage was essentially a blank slate, so Im starting all over again... I started with the 3rd bay since this will be my main work space. Moved the toolbox into place, added some shelving, pegboard and a couple of cabinets to get stuff out of boxes. Then started some heavy duty shelving above the garage door, the plan is to continue the shelving all the way across the wall. You can also see the start of my LED shop light install, still need to tidy up the wiring and get more lights for the rest of the garage.

Next steps were getting some drywall up in the two car portion of the garage as it is not finished. I started with some insulation as I plan to heat the garage someday... The 5/8" fire rated drywall is heavy stuff and I hate it! Ha Ha

After the drywall was up, I installed more K-rail and some "floating" shelves for storage.

Next item on the list was to install some upper cabinets for "hidden" storage. Also built some smaller floating shelves for more storage.

Black95Z28,

Congratulations on the new space!

You might consider posting your location in your profile. Some local GJer's may have helpful info on sourcing materials and such for outfitting your garage.

Best regards,

Scott

Sorry for the lack of updates, I have been very busy working on the house since we moved in... We actually painted the living/dining room, kitchen and daughters bedroom before we moved in. I also built the platform for the washer/dryer, redid the floor and painted the laundry room.

I also put up all of the curtain rods/curtains, clock and signs for my wife. She wanted a shiplap wall so I did that in the living room before I hung up the TV.

I was also busy in the garage and working on the landscaping all summer.

Installed some upper cabinets, along with drywall and shelving.

Had to move the fence back, it was installed right up to the driveway and the garage door, not working for me. I also added a gate by the garage so I could access the backyard, trash can, etc. from the driveway.

Some of the front yard landscaping going on, I decided to completely redo the front yard, it was a mess when we moved in... all of the grass was dead, most of it had been scrapped up and dumped in the backyard. This corner had wood chips dumped on top of dead grass with some plants sprinkled inside.

I also buried all of the gutters, I hate traditional gutters, always in the way.

IMG_20180602_090839_zpsmcpojdma.jpg

Also had my concrete guy fill in the driveway, I couldnt stand the stupid jog in it...

I then continued with the landscaping of the front yard, adding rock beds on both sides of the walkway and along the side of the yard. I buried the gutter here as well, much cleaner look and gets the water further away from the house.

The section between the utilities was originally grass and I had interest in that, so I went with rock instead.

Next up was more concrete work, had my guy dig out the slope, pour a sidewalk for my gate/trash cans and a pad for my future shed.

More front yard progress, decided to rock the corner, easier than dealing with the little triangle of grass in my opinion.

I then finished the rock along the fence line (street side), I had to dig out the dirt, install the fabric and then shovel all of the rock.

On to more rock in the backyard, first arounf the shed pad, then the west side of the house and along the patio.

I finished the roof of the dog run and then took a break to do some other things, I didnt want to fully enclose the dog run until I get the 1/4- road base and artifical turf installed.

I decided to have the rest of my back yard dug out to match the shed pad eleveation. I then needed to build a retaining wall to hold back the soil and provide a location for some stairs to access the two levels. They are apx 2' apart depending on the spot you measure from.

I forgot a few pics of the french drain I installed, also tied the gutter into it to keep the water away from the wall. The drain exits at the Southeast corner of the yard, close to the fence line. I made a pea gravel and river rock pit to help control the water.

I also installed two deadmen to help hold the wall back, not sure if it was necessary, but I dont want to have to redo this anytime soon...

I used rebar in every other void in the block and fillled every block completely with concrete. Again, probably overkilll, but I dont want to do this again. I also installed 12" pieces of all thread in the concrete so I can bolt down the landscaping timbers as a top cap.

Back to the garage, I built and installed heavy duty shelving around the upper portion of the walls. The walls are 10' above the stem wall, so I have plenty of room over the doors and sidewalls.

I also installed LED shop lights for the 3rd car bay so that I can actually see what Im doing. :)

I also added insulation as I went along, hoping to add heat some day.

I then built a smaller shelf for more storage and corner shelving to utilize the dead space.

Continuing the drywall down the wall, then more K rail and upper shelving.

Also relocated the sprinkler controller to a better location, added a 2x4 for mounting and used cable tray to hide the wiring.

More garage pics, working on organization, so I put up some more shelves and upper cabinets.

Then I moved on to trimming out the window, nothing special, just some 1x4 to clean up the opening. One board short (of course), so Ill have to pick up another stick soon.

I spent some time over the holidays working on our master bath. When we bought the house, the master only had one sink, but has a dual sink vanity setup. I have hated this since the first time we looked at the house and finally started the process of converting to dual sinks. As per normal, the wife took this as an opportunity to change the style of teh sink we had as well, so I bought two new sinks, faucets, etc for the conversion.

I started by changing out the existing sink to the new equipment so that we still had one functional sink.

Next up was laying out the second sink to match, I transferred the measurements from the first sink and cut out the counter top. I then located the drain and water lines in the bottom of the cabinet and drilled the holes. I still need to build a new drain line for both and tap in the pex lines.

Thanks to some great friends, I finally have hot/cold to my second sink in the master. We also installed two more hose bibs, I did not care for the location of the existing taps. I added one by the garage so I dont have to pull hose from the back corner of the house and one at the other end of the porch for watering the trees in the back yard.

Wow great work all around.

I see you have a white boxer, freaking awesome. I unfortunately lost mine last year to a brain tumor and dearly miss her. She was a pain but absolutely amazing. Our reversed brindle male still looks for her once in a while.
