Hello been a while since I have posted here hope this is still the correct spot for it.

Did a search first seen some good reviews here on the older style Titan ratchets.

Just wondering if anyone has played with there newer style.

I know they are Taiwan or Chinese but a lot of the Taiwan stuff is "decent" now.

I seen this one online and I am tempted to get it

3/8 ratchet 90 tooth 12 inches long.

Any info/help is appreciated.

Thanks

Looks nice. Tool discounter has the 3/8 for $22.50 and the 1/2 for $30

The handle looks nice. Anyone taken apart one of these 90 tooth Taiwan ratchets? They appear to be becoming almost a ubiquitous as the 72T Taiwan design rebranded by every tool brand and its cousin. My guess is this 90T ratchets sold by duralast, kobalt, and now Titan are all the same OEM.

From what i have seen they do not make a flex head in that style/look.

I actually like that it is longer without the flex head.

heads look quite compact, don't like fact switch is not recessed, not keen on the anodized finish, will need refinishing or will soon look junky .
looking forward to a tear down video and torque test :)
assume will be the standard for taiwan manufacturers and see it in all styles within a year .

Thanks for the part numbers. Wish the 1/4 drive version was longer than 6 inches. Curious if titan copied the MAC/Proto 90 tooth or possibly, the Carlyle 90 tooth.:dunno:

also curious about the handle. Some listings say the handles are anodized aluminum. I don't need any more ratchets but, I might need this one:lol:

No idea, waiting see a tear down and load test . Not needing any but would be more likely just buy gearwrench 84T sets as come on some good offers and they proven pretty decent for the cost range .

The problem with these Titan ratchets is, They only work for assembly work. For disassembly you will have to purchase the LOOSIN Ratchet

OK so I just got my Titan/Klutch ratchets.

Opened the box grab that 1/4' out and it's broke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unused and broken!!!!!!!!!

OOFA!!!!! :eyecrazy:

I called Northern about it and they said "Sorry do you want a refund or a replacement"

Either way I do not have to send back the tool.

Northern service so far excellent!

First time I have ordered from them in 20+ years.

I know these are Taiwan tools and I didn't buy them thinking they were the best.

I did buy them for the cool looking factor.

Pop the trunk at a car show and show your trunk tools thing.

The ratchets themselves have what looks like to me a non removable spring clip that holds in the internals.

I will have to pop one off and find a replacement.

The issue with the 1/4" is the selector lever will move slightly to the center while tightening and jam the ratchet.

Loosening it seems OK........so far

I will say this they are extremely comfortable in your hand

1/2" and 1/4" side by side.

This pic is of the 1/4" only notice the positions of the selector.

How's the action on them? Anything about how strong they are? I really like the handle, might pick up a few just to try em out.

That spring clip is removable. Try pushing directly on the end of one side and see if you can get the clip to spin itself out into the open where you can grab the end with needle nose pliers and pop it out of the channel it's in.

Those ratchets are most likely bone dry inside if they are like other Taiwan ratchets. Open the 1/4" drive ratchet up and put a little grease or oil in there and it will probably start working fine.

Yeh every taiwan ratchet I ever open been 100% dry .
bit of lithium grease and couple drops of atf generally make them far more smooth .
I would buy 3pc set of gearwrench 84T over these or at least give it time for revisions and quality become proven worthy .

Took it apart it was lubed. Not a lot but it wasn't dry.

Cleaned it re lubed it put it back together same issue.

Apart again together again same issue.

Apart played with detent spring, a hair better.

Apart yet again played with spring again and same nonsense.

So I guess the spring, detent pin or pawl is messed up.

When the "new" one gets here I will see how that one works.

If its the same the 1/4" ones are JUNK.

The 1/2" one was well lubed and again the handle is extremely comfortable.

If the "new" one is better then I will grab a spring and detent pin from my gun kit and see if I can solve the problem.

Here is a pic.

Interesting, it's a single pawl ratchet. Looks somewhat similar to the MAC 90 tooth ratchet, but not identical by any means. Probably more of a "convergent evolution" thing than a copy.

Off the top of my head the only High Tooth ones I have are the Husky 100 tooth, the Harbor Freight Snap On flex head look a like and a Snap On 80 tooth in 3/8th.

As to how they hold up against the others I haven't used the 1/2" Titan/Klutch yet.

But being the 1/4" was broke right out of the box.

For now I'm going to say the Titan/Klutch stuff is Junk

It could have been a fluke, I will have to wait and see when the replacement gets here.

As i said in the other posts the handle is really comfortable.

Also the handle on the 1/4" is a little big (thick) for tight spots compared to other 1/4" ratchets.

Yeh post a comment on replacement and first few uses of these, would like know how smooth they seem in terms of switch, back drag and general ergonomics plus durability of that anodised handle :-/
klutch looks better fine details such as recessed switch and color choice.

The Titan is identical just a different color.

As for the so called recessed switch see the pics on page 1.

There is a cutout for the switch to be recessed but the switch sticks up out of the recess.

Almost like 2 different company's made this ratchet and then pieced them together.

They look nice but the non-recessed switch would put me off.

I've got several Kobalts that I'm about to toss because the way I usually hold them they are always going neutral or reversing on me.

I may try opening them and messing with spring tension but I doubt that's the actual problem.

It's nice to be able to thumb the switch when you need to but at this point is give that up for a quarter turn control like a round head SK or even better the Craftsman that had the knurled ring that you could choke up on and spin with your fingers.

Yeh I see what mean about switch and recess (recess is on klutch version only), why shaped switch to protrude recess is beyond me. not keen on the chunky easy marked alloy handle myself .
Much prefer gearwrench 3pc set 81207F or 81206F for low cost but good ratchets, I got 81207 set for 49bucks.

best i can do until get one in hand again.

back is totally flat, preferred recess look of the klutch until see your pic with button stepped up, black is far better than the blue anodised. handle nice in hand and lengths good but 3/8 felt dry and notchy clicky, assumed lube sort that but maybe not !
cheapest taiwan ratchets I got are 72T & they butter smooth once lubed, gearwrench 84T about best I found for lowish cost and they do long handles in either standard hard handle or slim soft grip .

Got the "new" replacement today.

SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a little better. but just not a smooth action at all.

For less money and a better feeling action BUT not as "cool" looking you can get a HF one.

Just posted this review on Northern's website lets see if the actually publish it.

______________________________________________________________

Bought the 1/4 version of this ratchet.

Honestly only bought it since it looked nice with the anodized handle.

Well right out of the box it was broken.

Called Northern they said sorry sent out a replacement no questions asked.

Great service.

Just opened the box on the "new" replacement.

The action is clunky and not smooth at all.

Jams up just like the first one but not as bad.

Keep in mind this is just turning it by hand not actually putting pressure or stress on it.

The design is new so maybe they will work out the bugs.

For now save your hard earned money!!!!!!

Single rocking pawl supported by switch cam pin not a favourite of mine.
Smoothest cheaper taiwan generic ones I found quite good always used separate pawl for forward/reverse and tend have less drag and no issues with select lever etc.
Are these new 90tooths taiwan or actually china coo !? .
