I work for a big international manufacturing company that applies pretty strict rules about 5S (basically cleaning and organizing), which means that usually everything that does not comply 100% with this policy, gets thrown out.

So couple of days ago I was wandering outside the building and came across the pile of things they threw out... On top of it was a small bench drill/mill and a small lathe.

I went to investigate who threw them out and went to see the plant controller as I wanted to buy them (scrap price anyway). Unfortunately the answer was that for some bureaucratic reason they can not sell them to me... but, they can give them to me for free.

After a phone call later to a friend to bring his truck, we had them loaded and brought to my place.

They are not in perfect shape, some minor things are damaged/missing, but mostly needs just cleaning, some grease and adjustment.

I really can't complain for the price I got them
There were even some accessories included inside the base of both machines (vise, mills, drill bits, spare belts, gears for cutting different threads on the lathe, etc.)

The plan is to disassemble everything, clean, remove the hideous paint done by brush, grease everything and replace everything damaged or missing.

Most machine tools use little to no GREASE. Oil is the lube to use and there is special oil to use on the ways, way oil. When cleaning NO abrasives on the ways either. I would also go back and try to find any tooling that could belong to those machines. Tooling is as valuable as the tool.

Everything was pretty much stacked in the cabinet under the machine. Here is what I got for the drill/mill.

Those are some awesome scores. I never found anything that good, but used to work for a contractor flipping foreclosed homes into rentals. Would find some cool stuff people left, but never anything that good.
