Newest Cornwell eBay Purchase...and I'm pissed!

I purchased these Cornwell spark plug grabbers off eBay and the seller had them described as brand new. The pictures in his auction showed a tool with good chrome and in new condition. He had 3 for sale at the time I purchased mine and it looked like originally over 10 total. Below are the pictures of what showed up. Am I being unreasonable in being upset? Yes, the tool may be new, but it is in pretty crappy condition with the rust and oxidation. He has not gotten back to me yet, but I have a feeling if I go through eBay I will be out shipping both ways and at that point it is not even worth it to send the tool back. Sorry, just had to vent. I had been looking forward to adding my first Cornwell tool to my box and this did not make for a good first impression.

Yep I would be unhappy, but sometimes you win sometime you lose. I would clean them up and keep them.

You have every right to be pissed. Brand new means brand new not NOS that has been kicking around long enough for that to happen to them. Give the guy a day or two to get back to you. If he doesn't file a claim with ebay for a full refund. You should get the shipping fees you paid him back. If you are required to send it back ask him to pay for them. If he doesn't pay the fees eave him negative feedback. If he does pay the fees leave him a neutral for the hassle.

You paid for a brand new tool, that's exactly what you should have got. Anything less is unacceptable.

How much did you pay? What percentage of new price did you pay? 30%-50%?

How much is your time worth? Not trying to stick up for the seller but sometimes its better to move on. Clean them up, put some oil on them, stick them in your toolbox. Buying off ebay is always a risk but usually you will come out on top.

I paid $21 shipped after cashback...no idea what these retail for as I can't find them on the Cornwell website. I wasn't trying to get a smokin' deal, just looking for a good set of boot pullers for when I do tune-ups to the family vehicles and someone on this site had good things to say about this particular model.

Does it matter? Letting people get away with stuff like this is what's turning ebay into a craphole. What ever happened to a man's word being worth something? What ever happened to doing the right thing? Granted my outrage goes beyond a tool or money, but letting stuff like this continue is just unacceptable. You may not see it as a big deal, but it is.

Agreed...I have been buying and selling on eBay for over 10 years and wish the site would go back to how it was many years ago.

i bought a lock/alarm remote on ebay recently...listed as new.
contacted seller, told him he must have made a mistake so i need my new remote or a refund.
seller sent me another remote. sent him another message and told him this must be a joke...i need a refund.
he finally sent me a new one and told me to keep the other two used ones.
they retail for $100 plus from the dealer...got 3 remotes for $9.

Well the seller got back to me and offered to refund my purchase + shipping if I return the tool. He said these are new "old" stock and that he has sold over 140 pairs with no complaints. I have a hard time believing that all of these had rust...his pictures sure don't depict that on eBay.

I guess I have to decide what to do now. Probably as some of you guys said, just oil them and stick them in the box and leave appropriate feedback. I can live with the oxidation, but the rust is hard to look at. Oh well...

See if he will refund half of the purchase price with the agreement that you won't post negative feedback for him.
Will that work for you?

I've never seen a tool corrode that quickly though... :headscrat

Is the coating on some Cornwell tools that bad?

No, I don't think Cornwell has sold those in a ............decade or so, if they are new, meaning never used, they have been sitting aorund a long time in humid conditions.

If you decide to keep those, a wire cup wheel on a Dremel along with WD-40 will make those look pretty good. I use the little wire cup wheel to polish the underside of Briggs & Stratton cylinder heads. The main key is to keep the piece wet with WD-40 as you're going at it with the wire cup wheel.

I had no idea they had been discontinued that long. That may explain the surface wear. Still, I think the seller should have accurately described the wear.

I guess that's why i don't buy off ebay anymore. Have had a few transactions and can't say i've been thrilled with any of them. Only one was real bad, the rest were marginally ok. I'd probably just clean them up and move on.

Also Cornwell did not make those. They were made for them. They were also made for other tool companies as well.
