I've been hanging around here for a while now and finally decided to break my silence. I can't remember what brought me here initially, but I stayed for all the different things I've read about - mostly related to shop organization and old tools. Soon I'll be picking up a 75 year old South Bend lathe and will be looking for tips and tricks related to that machine.

I'm happy to have benefited so far from this forum and hope I can contribute something at some point.

Welcome to the GJ! I'm sure you'll have things to contribute. Don't ignore "Free Parking", there are plenty of things there that aren't goofing around. And don't ignore "General Garage Discussion", because there's a wide variety of subjects there, too, of a... general... shop nature.

C'mon, I'm the nicest, most humble guy you'll ever meet! The handle is a nickname from college that stuck and somehow it hadn't been taken when I signed up here.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll try to check into Free Parking now and then, but I'm a recovering forum addict and stuff like that just opens up rabbit holes I can't seem to get out of - then again I've gotten lost after visiting some of the fabrication and shop discussions too...

BG: you might be right staying out of FREE PARKING until you meet enough members and get to know us and how we tick. i stayed out for maybe a 18 months after i joined because there was plenty for me to learn in the other sections.

there have been several threads on lathes so i'd read them and as much as you can about that brand before bringing it home. i don't own one (yet), but i've heard both good and bad about SB brand.

good luck and you can find me mostly in old tools if you have questions or are sharing your wisdom, but as others know i tend to get around the site as i have time.

cheers

Thanks drivesitfar, I think I remember seeing you around the vise threads when I was cleaning mine up and mounting it (old Prentiss).

BG: one thing i suggest you do is take plenty of pictures of all your tools and projects before during and after so when you post you'll have some to post. please post some of that Prentiss to jog my memory and to show me you know how to post pictures. ok?

take care and best of luck.

also when you are reading the threads about a lathe or other tools and you find what you need maybe make a quick post and say thanks because there are only a few of us that take the time to post and it would be nice to know somebody is reading our dribble. also ask questions as i usually do if you don't find all the answers you are looking for and you'd be surprised that the guy answering might have invented the thing.

cheers

Thanks, I try to document everything - if nothing else just so I know how stuff goes back together. I'll always thank folks for helpful information in a current thread, I just have never done it for things from a few years back in threads that come up in a search. Can't hurt though, so why not start now?

Pictures are one of the things I like about this site - you can host them here instead of uploading them somewhere else first. Here's the vise on a brake drum stand that a coworker welded together for me. I need to knock the scale off it again and paint it to keep it from disintegrating. It moves around more than I like though, so I might just remount the vise and use this for a grinder stand.

Thanks Bill! I might have to pay you a visit if I ever get around to doing some work to a Suzuki DR650 I have...

Thank you for the compliment and the tips. The vise and most of the stand have been pretty rust-free so far, it's just the brake drum that seems to be wasting away. When I first picked it up I used a needle scaler and a wire wheel to knock off all the rust scale, but since then it's been flaking off again. One of these days I'll hit it again and then paint it.
