Newly Discovered Tamper Proof Screw

This never seen before tamper proof screw was on the bottom of my Mr. Coffee coffee maker. It has a series of very small Phillips head screws with one single tamper proof screw in the mix. My initial thought was the factory worker stripped out the head on one of the Phillips screws. After close examination with my Streamlight Stylus Pro and my reading glasses, I discovered it was a tamper proof screw that I'd never seen before. I found a couple of images on Google. One guy had to make his own screwdriver to repair his Black&Decker coffee maker. Apparently, the screws are used on other brands of coffee makers besides Mr. Coffee.


The screws on the left are the tamper proof.

anything to slow us down . and probably they only use 1 as it's slower to install than a regular screw

I think I have one of those generic bit socket sets that covers that style, I’ve never encountered a need, but not a coffee drinker either..

I had to remove the bottom cover of the coffee maker because I kept smelling a burnt electrical smell. Upon close examination, everything looks fine.

So thats not a standard Spanner bit?

No it has rectangular slots instead of round holes. It looks almost like a Phillips head, but with the center filled in with metal.

My French press doesn't have any screws.

A standard 2-pin spanner bit will remove and install them. I ran into 3 of them on my office fan, 1 on each cover with 3 other phillips screws.

I've seen those screws on Mr. Coffee, Mr. Microwave, Mr. Radar Range, Mr. Refrigerator, Mr. Toaster. I removed them with Spaceballs the Screwdriver

A bit for that comes in the Harbor Freight security bit set. I bet a bit for it comes in all of the security bit sets available these days.

I had to buy a set of these bizarre security bits for the exact same reason - to get into the bottom of one of a series of failed Mr. Coffee machines, all of which either blew out or leaked their heating elements. After the 3rd one (of which none were repairable) I decided never again to get one of these Chinesium "Bargain" machines and spend the money for a Moccamaster.

It's a Bodum. The plastic handle and base clip onto the carafe.

I fashioned it from an old typewriter key.
You see, the letter "a" on the screwdriver will fit into the corresponding "a" hole in the "Arthur's" head screw.

I put these type screws on 2 water heater covers in our two condos on Tybee.

Some renter took the covers off and turned the temp screw up to 160 !

Thank goodness I found this while we were at our units staying for awhile, we were getting scalded.

I keep the tamper resistant bit in a locked closet.

I'm slowing them down from messing things up.

Kinda like tamper resistant, not tamper proof.
