now, i'm no expert (as evidenced by my portrait video capture), but it seems to me like what i have here is a bad compressor in my outside unit. :(

the condenser fan was completely removed during the video, and FWIW it spins freely and silently. only moving part is the compressor.

And add a big extra filter dryer sized for suction line size before the new compressor. The junk the old comp put in the line, not to mention acids it may have created if arcing inside the CFC atmosphere, will attack the new compressor. There are treatments for the acid problems as well.

Good luck, that problem will ****.

Sounds to me like the reversing solenoid is chattering. Pull the plug off of the reversing valve and see if it still makes the same noise. Compressor could be out on internal.

tech confirmed compressor is junked. it's using hcfc-22, so it was recommended to replace the system. seconded by two other reputable companies in my area. gathering quotes now, but looks like this will be a $10k+ unplanned expense. :willy_nil

I have heard rumors that some people replace R22 with propane..

They get better system efficiency as well... Some youtube videos about it.

i'm in south central..... indiana. for a high-end gas furnace and a/c unit to replace the heat pump, brand name, etc etc, is where it's over $10k. we could get a more modern and efficient base model heat pump (still brand name) w/ aux electric furnace for about $8k, but since we recently had the gas line run to the house, might as well make use of it!

Price sounds about right if it's a multi-stage or modulating furnace and a 15 seer or better A/C.

I am not looking forward to the day my 1995 Trane 1200 needs replacing. The air handler is under the house in a crawl space. It was put in ten years after the house was built (house was built with no system whatsoever), and they had to knock the crawl space door wood frame out and skid it to its present location. Attached to a magnificent inlet plenum that is carefully cut and fitted from sheet metal to straddle a floor joist underneath, the floor cut out on either side of the joist under the stairs and an inlet box and filter above floor under the stairs. Since installation, there has been a 12 ft deep redneck elevated screened in back porch built, so new one would require some dirt excavation under the porch to get the new air handler to the crawl space door. I replaced the condenser fan last year, it had been rattling for quite a while, and failed on a day when it was zero degrees, coldest I've ever seen here. Used my torpedo heater outside at the condenser to make work bearable.
