NG heater vent help needed

Hi all. I'm installing an older ceiling hung natural gas heater in my 2 stall detached garage. I have some questions I was hoping you all could help with. My heater is gravity vented, so I have to vent up. There is a second story above my garage, but my vent location will be near the eve where the roof meets the wall, so the vent will be in the crawl space, not in the middle of the upstairs room.

That brings me to my first question: My garage has a barn style roof, so the part of the roof where the vent will exit is nearly vertical. If I have to vent past the peak of the roof, it would require a good 12' of chimney and it will look awful. How far out of the roof does my chimney need to terminate?

Second, my garage sits only about 6' away from my house. And the side of the garage where the vent will exit is the side that faces the house. I'd guess the end of my vent pipe will only be about 10' from the outside wall of my house. Is this a concern?

I don't have code concerns in my municipality, I just care about safety. What do you guys think?

Hopefully someone who is sure on the subject will chime in. I believe I read someplace your vent should expire 2' above anything within 10'. I believe this includes the peak of your roof. I can picture how that would look "awful."

That is correct the chimney must terminate 2' above anything within a 10' radius. Another option would be installing a power venter which would allow you to vent the heater out the sidewall of the garage. Field Controls makes such a unit

Keep in mind you don't need to be past the peak, just at least 10' from any structure. Once the pipe is above the hip of the roof you will be 10' away pretty quickly.

A gas vent and a chimney are not the same, the 3' min and 2' above anything within 10' rule does not apply to a gas vent.

503.6.4 in the International fuel gas code has a chart with min vent height based on roof pitch.
