Brought this nice old Atlas 1060 home this morning. Really good condition, even has an Atlas motor. Only issue is the Jacobs chuck is nearly frozen, got it off and soaking in diesel tonight. Trying to determine an age for it, not having much success. The serial number is pretty high from what I can find, 28385. Can anyone give me an approximate manufacture date?

Thanks

Yeah just pop that chuck apart with a press so you can clean it up properly.

Got the chuck apart pretty easily. Inside was clean, but I had to drive one jaw out with a punch! The other two pushed out somewhat easy, but were still snug. Couldn't see any reason for the chuck to be so tight. Cleaned and lubed every thing, started back together, and the jaws wouldn't start to go back, bound up tight. Cleaned my glasses and got under better light....and found the problem. Some time ago, someone though it would be wise to hammer on the face of the chuck..not real hard but a lot, leaving small peen marks everywhere, including the opening of jaw bores! I can feel burrs on all 3 bores. Tomorrow I'll clean them up with a Dremel and report the outcome.

SUCCESS!! Dremeled the bores smooth, cleaned and lubed, reassembled. Smooth from full open to closed tight. Thanks to all, without info I learned from this forum I would have undoubtedly bought a new, expensive chuck.
