Hello board. I'm a suburbanite who moved to the country about 10 years ago. In that time I've picked up some habits - gardening, landscaping, maintaining the lawn, BBQing, HUNTING. I'm currently on 4 acres and just picked up 25 acres of rolling open meadow w/ about 6 acres of trees. I ran across this board researching metal garages; the kind Morton builds. This is square one for me. I'd like to build something; garage/shop/accessory building/guest apartment/hobbyshop (pick a title?). I'd like to get informed and go into this build with both eyes open. Looks like you gentlemen (and ladies) know a few things about that. Thanks in advance.

Welcome from Washington State, We will want pics of the build

Well, he ain't gonna build it until we give him the advice he seeks. I hate so say it because it's trite, but a search for 'buildings with apartment' and other similar terms will get you started.

One other method sure to bring many out of the woodwork is to tell what you plan on doing. That way everyone under the sun will offer their opinion on how you are going about it wrong. :D

Thanks all. Garage scholars; sages! I'm glad I'm here. I would love to share pics once I get there. Agreed friend, I need to run some searches and read how members work within their means. I've seen some fantastic setups on this forum.

Early next week I meet with the soil scientist to hopefully find a couple of perc sites. Then I'll be looking for an understanding of whether I should go ahead with a well and septic system in advance of our main home (let's include electric). Will know more about my physical and budgetary constraints later. Assuming I get that worked out, the plan it to build an accessory building that my family and I can live in once we sell our current home. The building will be:
Garage, Shop, Apartment (potential inlaw suite).
I'm in the foothills. There will be bush hogging and grading. There will be trees to fell. Post holes to dig. Deer to slew. Gardens to plant. Beer to drink. I need a tractor! I'm gonna do this!

That sounds like a whole lotta fun to me. Agree on the tractor. But that's another subject all of its own. Some might say go ahead and buy a backhoe and get every attachment you can in the deal.
