So my wife and I purchased a modular home not too long ago. They have built it, delivered it, and it's here waiting to be set up. The problem is during the time i was waitng on the house to be delivered, I came up with the idea to build a nice detached garage. Now as ya'll may or may not know, this is a problem. You see i've never really had a "garage" before. Sure i had a little one car thing that was piled with **** at one point. I've had storage buildings, but i digress. So, here i am, dying to get started on this garage, and i'm having to wait on these tiny details like our home getting set up first. My wife thinks i'm crazy and says i'm not even excited about our new home, but what's a guy to do? I believe my priorities are in line, what do ya'll think?

You're married, you have to do what SWMBO says. Sorry!

And, if you are smart, you will at least give the impression you like that... :lol_hitti

Yes your priorities are fine. Unfortunately there is not much you can do. I'd recommend patience because once you do have your garage it's only going to get better (worse). Have fun!

I see posts like this on here all the time "tell me I'm right and my wife is crazy". While it may be true she isn't going to give a **** what any one on here says. Just remember: 1) you married her for a reason 2) divorce is expensive 3) happy wife happy life. Get the house done and settled then build your garage, you will all be happier that way.

In order to properly maintain your new home, you are going to need a secure base of operations.

From what I have read here and heard, try and get the house done first for a few reasons:

A) You need a place to sleep and or Step #3
B) If the wife is busy decorating the new house she won't be helping you decorate the garage.

Nothingwrong with doing both at once. Your building a home, sanctuary, not just a house. In my case WE had to do both here because the shop was storage for household goods until we either threw out stuff or moved it into the house. That said we were married better than 30 years at the time and both had accumulated some stuff :). The upstairs in the shop is her arts/crafts and library.

Last time that I was convinced to build a small garage area for "my stuff" it was taken over by other peoples stuff and my stuff ended back in a pile in the corner again anyways. I'd say build one of those little Home Depot Garages for now, use it, and when the house is done, let her use it for storage and / or her own car, then build yourself a real garage!
(Feel free to complete all 3 steps mentioned above in the mean time)

I know the feeling. I am building a nice house with a 3 plus car attached garage, not to mention the basement garage 20 x 40 plus. My wife has finally grasped that I could care less about the cabinets in the kitchen, etc. Just get it done, I want my space.

Keeping the wife happy makes the garage project go so much better. If she expects you to be excited about the house, then be excited that the house is one day closer to your garage starting. But don't make it seem you are excited just because she is getting a new house so you can get a new garage. That could backfire and you miss steps 1 and 2 and then 3 is further away.

Keep us posted on the outcome!

Skip step one. While doing step 2 you will probably be thinking/planning step 3.

Question is, will thinking about Step 3 make Step 2 go that much quicker? :dunno:
Might be better to think about.... paying taxes instead; may put Step 2 into the record book.... then get the garage up ASAP.

Hahaa,, thanks for the responses guys. I figured ya'll would see where i'm comin from. I guess it's a few more trips to Home depot looking at paint colors (while sneaking off pricing materials) before i can get going on this. Anyway, i will keep you updated. Modulars normally take 15 minutes to install, but the crane guys are 2 weeks behind, so it's just sitting up there tickin me off..lol. Shooting for this Thursday for the setup.

Think of the house like the Manse next to a church. The church is really the primary building and the Manse is the living quarters for it right. And really our garages are sort of our halls of worship right. Explain it like that and she'll figure it out.;)

I placed a 40ft storage container, one of those insulated ones that junk
comes in from over seas. next to the garage. Store all the stuff I don't need right away.

40ft of 2ft deep shelves down each side string of lights down the middle,4ft center isle and a lock on the double doors.

Painted to match the garage. and PRESTO room to work in the garage

Just tell her your going to need a place to store all those expensive tools your going to buy. Ask her what does she want you to do just leave them lay outside? Then she will understand and she'll come around to your way of thinking.
