Night Light - diagnosis help please

OK, when I moved into my house the nightlight -dusk to dawn mercury light- stayed on all the time. When I went to purchase a new eye, a new light was just a couple dollars more so I did what I thougt was right, and bought the new light.

Since then, last summer, since new the light sometimes does not light completely. It does this about 50/50 and lights fine the other.

What is wrong with this damn thing.

Bought at Lowes, don't recall the details on the lamp.

Check the voltage going to it....if it's good....take the light back.

Check the socket, and make sure the bulb is screwed in fully! My (sodium) lamp will do the same thing as the bulb seems to want to unscrew itself...

Failing to strike properly when power is first applied is a common sign of a failing bulb.
You didn't happen to replace the fixture and re-use the original bulb, did you?

New fixture and bulb, I will check voltage and bulb being tight and if that don't solve it I will replace the bulb.

Well got home tonight nd checked the bulb and it was tight, to dark to pull out the multimeter, will check voltage tomorrow. (pretty sure that won't be a problem)

Looks like I will try a new bulb.
