Finally found an online resource for the gloves that doesn't think that Nitrile=$$$$$.
Check out www.seton.com.
I purchased two sizes of their polyester shell nitrile coated gloves (size 8 & 9, BB348 and BB349 respectively) - same style as the Home Depot ones mentioned previously. 12 pair were $8.30, and I stumbled on the site on a day when they were offering free shipping on all orders. Normally, shipping is free with a $249.00 purchase.
Here's my review -
As I approach the mid-century mark, I notice my invisible friend is playing more a part of my life than I'd like. You probably have heard of him - Arthur Itis?
I have very large hands - from the fold at the wrist to the tip of my "waving finger" is 8-1/2".
Plus, I'm a "sweater" - I sweat from the palms of my hands, from the backs of my hands - if my fingernails could sweat, they would.
To top that all off, the oils in my skin are mildly acidic. Any raw metal - cast iron tables on metal or woodworking machines, chisels, pliers, etc will rust whereever I touch my hands.
I've been on the lookout for something to combat all of my failings - reduced grip strength, sweaty hands, acidic oils. Rubber or latex gloves cure the acidic issue, but aggravate the sweating. They do improve grip strength, but aren't durable enough.
Leather gloves will handle the sweating issue until they saturate, then they transfer the oils to whatever I touch just as an ungloved hand would. They protect my hands from splinters, etc, but acutally require more grip strength than bare skin, because they aren't grippy.
Stumbled on some cheap nitrile coated gloves at Home Depot. Yellow polyester shell, with black nitrile on the palms and wrapping most of the finger up to the first knuckle. Worked wonders - grip like crazy, no skin oils touch tooling, polyester soaks up the sweat so I don't drip. However, they weren't very durable - I'd use up a pair a day at the shop. (I think these were about $5.00 for 6 pair)
Home Depot briefly stocked some better quality ones, Home Depot orange in color with off-white polyester shell. About $7.50 for 5 pair. Much better quality - would last days instead of just one day. Then they quit selling them.
I love the Seton gloves. For the price ($.69 each), they can't be beat.
