Like most here ive done a ton of reading and last year was my year to finally build my shop. My father owns a construction company so ive been brought up with a construction background. I own a landscaping company and in the hours we werent working last year i had the guys help me out. I got prices from all the big companies and their prices weren't bad, just no one did it the way i wanted. Its in my yard and i want it to look like an old rustic barn. I started on the faux stone foundation yesterday and it will be sided in rough cut hemlock. Im far from finished, it will probably be a work in progress the rest of my life but here are some pictures of the progress so far.

That looks great! Great size, and I like that it looks like a nice building, not the typical pole barn.

I'm curious what a building this size will do to your taxes. I live in the same town as you (assuming the building is where the sign on the truck is located), and have resisted building anything. Put a wood stove in last year, and they raised it $200/year.

haha dont say that, i put a wood stove in also didnt raise mine a bit. Im in hardwick and they gave me a hell of a time trying to put this up. hence the reason its done a bit differently. originally i was only allowed to do a carport for winter and the i had to up date my permit to put on the sides. Stupid codes. Your in blairstown?

Started some landscaping today. I pulled all the rocks from my property. figured why not save money. Doing this myself everything so far I have just under 10k into it. Not bad

seems as if no one enjoys my pictures but heres a few of my stone veneer aka vinyl stone. Very cost effective and easy install, still going to give me the rustic look im going for. Next is to pick up my hemlock from the saw mill and get er sided.

I also have a landscaping company and I'd like to build a garage within the next few years. You said you wished you'd have gone bigger, and that is my worry. I was thinking 30x50, but am starting to consider going 40x60. What do you think would be a good size?

Looks nice, the gable end overhangs are interesting. Looks like you'll have a lot to move when you finally get to pour the floor (I'm in the same boat)

Looks great and I like the stone veneer. The gable overhand with a rope on it, what will be it's use? Looks great for skinning a deer?

haha thanks guys

i wish i went 40-50 but im going to do a 10' lean to off the side for plows and skid steer. hopefully that will help a bit

Yes i have a ton to move. Unfortunately it got to cold in the fall by the time i was ready to pour, now im to busy with mulching and clean ups so hopefully ill get the floor poured in a month or 2.

The rope is just for show. Im going to put a fake looking gable end door trying to keep that rustic feel.

Man I'm loving this thread! I too like the rustic look and want to do it on the inside of my barn that I'm turning to my garage. Keep the pics coming please.

Everything looks great. I'd say doing it yourself was definitely worth it. That extra money can be used else where.

Looking great so far!

Like you I've been doing a ton of reading and planning my build for what seems like forever. Where did you get the faux stone? I'm going to use vinyl siding to match the house but considering breaking up the 14' walls with some faux stone or even real stone if I'm feeling ambitious.

Maybe I missed it but is that hardibacker underneath the stonework? (cementious backer board like one would use for tile?

I love the ridge beam hoist :) If I was in a more rural location I would have done that in a minute. However, it wouldn't be quite right where I live.

That is looking swell. Had to come up with a different word. :) Than great.
You should paint the front garage doors to match the barn door. That would look marvelous.

Thanks for the kind words. Cant wait to get the floor done this weekend. Ive never messed with that much concrete before but i got 10 buddies and 2 are masons so hope it goes well. I can then start my tool bench, finish interior walls and get my wood stove installed.

ranger, its actually calling novi stone. Cost me $700 for 4sq and i installed it in a weekend. Wish i did real as you can still tell its fake but the $$ i saved and time it was to hard not to do it. From the backyard and pool you cant tell its fake, its just up close you can.

matt, yes i had some left over wonder board from a few jobs and bought more but i planned on doing stone veneer so thats why i originally did it. But also never have to worry about it rotting along the ground.

Got my floor poured yesterday. Not bad for a bunch of red necks, bud light and a friend that's a mason. 6.5 inch of 4500psi with fiber and wire mesh.

We all say it, but don't actually realize it until it happens to us. lol
Mines not even 6 months old and I'm debating an addition already.

You've got a great layout with the cabinets and work bench. I especially enjoy what you've done with the exterior and landscaping.

Awesome build. More or less exactly the layout I'd do if/when I can get my garage built. Was curious about the barn door - how good of a seal does that have against the structure? I like the idea but would be concerned about it bleeding off a ton of heat during the cold months. Any plans for insulating the walls and ceiling?

turbo.. yes sir walls have r19 as im slowly finishing them. Im not sure if im going to spray the ceiling yet or do r30 bats. the barn door is not sealed yet but i did get some prices on brush seals for around the sides and its not very expensive. Probably the route ill go. If i notice its cold im thinking ill insulate the edges with foam just for winter.

Looks great! I'm planning a 30x40 and still trying to decide on a couple things. What's the ceiling height, roof slope, and garage door dimensions?
