How much head room you have up there? I've always thought about adding a loft on the one side of my garage. Hmmm....

What cabinets did you buy?? Can you show us the layout?

I have about 6'8 under the beam. The space is mostly for storage. I was supposed to have 8' under the beam but lost the battle for the height variance that would've made it possible. ah well.
Can't scan the cabinet plan right now but just got the call that they will ship on wed so by late next weekend might have photos. basically two tall storage walls, overhead cabinets the length of the counter, three under counter cabinets, and a big roller cab. Can't wait!

This is a very nice place!
But that chain hoist lift thing is going to get old fast.
There has got to be some way to sister a track long the side of your ridge beam for a trolley so you can lift things and even move them to and from the loft.

Cabinets arrived... Some assembly required

Cabinets came yesterday. Wow that's a lot of packaging. Plus the storage walls have a lot of parts. Fortunately found the box with the instructions.

Very nice garage and love the new cabinets!

Glad to see that I'm not the only one that had to wait on their Lista cabinets for a while. Your work area is going to look fantastic once the cabinets are in place.

Regards,

Stan

Finally got some extended time to get the rest of the cabinets in place. I re-configured the Global industries workbench legs to create a support structure for the vice. Next stop: using the cool Lista label making tools to label drawers and start putting things away.

Paper towels at the ready

I've been thinking about my garage for 20 years and on this list for the last two. So possibly I've merely cribbed this idea from someone else, and if so, sorry about lack of attribution. But I was pleased with this idea for a towel dispenser...

Drilled a 3" hole with a hole saw, then trimmed edge with some clear tubing split lenthwise.

And thus it has been cribbed from you, thanks. :spit:

I guess its similar to BoostAddiction's dispenser. Looks good. Anything holding the box in place?

Re: Paper towels at the ready

Cool idea. Perhaps the trim ring for a recessed light would be another idea to finish off the hole?

Yep that would work. Or an instrument bezel... I'm looking now for a hole saw exactly the size of this Porsche 911 dash clock. I'm thinking mount it on a cabinet door with a little shelf behind to carry the redtop battery?

Cabinet Instrumentation

So I know what this looks like, a guy with too much time on his hands. I am working on getting the next project started. Meanwhile, I keep unpacking boxes that have been lying around forever waiting for some organization to happen. First I had an extra redtop battery, not good enough to put in a racecar but so expensive I couldn't bear to throw away. Then I found a Porsche clock I removed from a racecar project (you use the space for a giant oil pressure warning light) When I happened on a VDO voltmeter (removed to make room for a boost gauge on an Audi project) I couldn't resist. So here are the first cabinets I've seen on the list with instrumentation. A voltmeter to tell me when to hook the battery to a charger, and a clock with telltale to remind me when I told her I'd be done in the garage...

Well it was just one of those things with the zoning board. I went in with a much bigger footprint than I ever expected to get, figuring I'd 'negotiate' it away in exchange for more height. To my surprise they wouldn't allow the height variance but were fine with the footprint. Go figure. Because of the size I was over budget from day one hence the long timeframe to complete.

Yes I've been to Millville quite a bit, it is only an hour south. Both tracks are fantastic and the kart facility could be the best in the country if they chose to develop it more. Thanks for the help offer, I'm in central NJ near Trenton so not too convenient.

I was curious about the size of your roof beam. You said it was 40' long but i didn't see any other dimensions. The reason i ask is i am looking into building something 40' and would like to do a similar roof.

Also, is the column for more of a support for the loft or is that necessary to help support the roof?

I am traveling at the moment so can't measure it but it is about 14"x8"

I was sorry to have those columns there but the engineer said the span was too big even for that ridge beam. I think the loft beam would've been fine but not the ridge. As I mention several times in the thread I would never do the engineered lumber again, an iron beam wouldn't have been that much more $ and would've allowed me to have a hoist on a trolley. (for both the ridge beam and the loft beam)

I gotta ask, all-in-all what did this entire project cost you?

Well I haven't exactly been eager to do an exact accounting. But as it sits there right now, I would guess ~$150K

Brandon, where'd you get the welding table?

Craigslist, just happened upon it. It's made by Weldsale in Phila; http://www.weldsale.com/
I couldn't pass up the deal since my dad had just given me his old MIG and arc equipment. I bought four 1000lb casters from castercity so I can move it around, and especially so I can push out into the driveway to weld in nie weather. I would definitely check CL since they are not something anyone ships a long distance and you are in the PHila orbit!
So at the ripe age of 50 I am finally learning to weld so far it ain't pretty.

To date, mainly have used the table for layout of unusual projects see photo

993 SuperCup

Please post more photos of your Porsche!
These are not that recent but this is what I have on this computer. The car ran the '95 Supercup season in conjunction with that years' F1 schedule. Then it was bought by a pro team and ran 5 years in the German GTP series, which it won at least once. It has 64K kilometers on it, all on the racetrack! However in all that time it never had a hard hit and it is still very authentic and original. IMHO it is the last and ultimate expression of the aircooled P-Cars.

That car is awesome! Someday...someday...

How big is the table? How the heck did you get it home and in the garage?

Your car is fantastic! You are very lucky to have such a rare beast. I'm assuming that it is not street legal? Glad to see that you enjoy it on the track.

It's 30x60" Fortunately bought it from a guy who was able to deliver. Then when I put the casters on it I used the chain hoist.

No, none of the cup cars can be registered by a long shot.

Maybe you can tell me if the brace is original, I don't know.

The strut brace is the original! Thank you for posting this photo. Your engine looks fantastic! Were is the air filter? I don't see it. Also, can you please post a photo showing the pulley in front of the fan? How many belts are on that pulley? This is awesome! Thank you!

Finally got one more thing off the floor: the water hose coil. Found this damaged-but-new Coxreel on ebay a month ago; finally got around to installing tonight. It was a bear doing it alone, it's gotta weigh 80 lbs.

Next: air hose reel

For my 50th birthday i got a new welder. Nice of Miller to paint them blue to match the cabinets. Too late to try it out tonight, but possibly this weekend.
