I have an old Sidchrome Australia 3/8 socket set, from some time through out the 80's.
Upon going through it today, I've discovered it dosent have a 16, or 18mm socket, that's all it's missing between 6-22, an 1/4-7/8. Strange. I thought they were standard sizes..
The 1/2" set has them.
Any ideas as to why they would not be included?

I also finally found the matching 1/4" set.

I have craftsman sets from that era that also skip 16 and 18. Never had much call for 16, but 18 became pretty common in the 90s on gm vehicles.

Most of those sets were built to Japanese Industrial Standards and they don't use 16 or 18mm. This was a more normal time when people weren't trying to fill pegs on a Hansen rack.

Most spanner and socket kits down here - skipped the 16 & 18 size until, "recently".

Lots didn't even have 13, 20 and 21.

... any ol toyota could be fixed with a 10,12,14,17,19 and a shifter .. :D

Nice looking old sets ..

For sets made in Asia this is a common problem even to this day. TOPTUL drives me nuts because the skip 18mm in virtually all of their sets. In some they skip 15mm. It's a though they never heard of General Motors. Being in Australia I would think this would be less of a problem there as Holden is big and part of GM. I would think that 15 and 18mm would be very common.

"You canna hand a man a grander spanner"

Mental note: must aquire some Sidchrome at some point.

FWIW I rarely use 16mm or 18mm on my French and Swedish cars. I guess they're universally uncommon...

15mm and 18mm 6 point sockets included in my new 130 pc Toptul set. Looked at some Sidchrome yesterday amongst others brands as I had hours to spare and went on a tool search and it's not a patch on Toptul.

Back in the 1970s when Metric was a dirty word, most sets excluded 16&18mm, but the individual tools were available.

Thought that may be it, but was not sure!

Regarding the Sidchrome, absolutely love the old stuff, all my sockets and most spanners are about 30 year old Sidchrome. The Aussie gears the only way to go!
