No attic vents?

I have a 24'x30' garage that has soffit vents but no gable or ridge vent. It stays hot in the summer, 5*-10* warmer than outside even if the rollup and man doors have been open. Since I've started using a fan to push cooler outside air in it'll get closer to outside temp but always warmer. 10' ceiling with R22 insulation, R13 walls. This evening I had the thought to check ceiling temp with an IR temp gun. Ceiling was 93*, inside temp 88*, outside temp about 85* according to NOAA (noticeably cooler going outside). I'm sure the ceiling is warmer in the middle of the day with full sun.

Will lack of venting kill my roof? Thoughts on adding gable vents or a ridge vent? Is either better? Will venting reduce ceiling temp and inside temp? I think gable vents might be easier to install. For indoor comfort I have a 24k BTU mini split I plan to install eventually, but attic venting should probably be addressed regardless.

Double the insulation to R44 would help…….a lot !!!!

venting……..Maybe one of the topics:

Do I need gable vents if I have soffit vents?
Many roofing contractors discourage using a gable vent with ridge vent and soffit vents because a gable vent interrupts the proper airflow and can cause the air current to flow perpendicular and unevenly throughout the attic.

Ridge vent install……pull off the shingle cap on the ridge. Cut back shingles and roof decking 1-2” on each side. Install matching ridge vent shingles with filter material attached. Often sold and one package. The other choice vent material and cover with shingle to match.

Power attic vent would be another choice.

You want to make sure the conditioned space is separated from the attic ..... this is where the loss occurs with vented attic's. Negative pressure in the attic pulls conditioned air out of the living space -- up and out.

In any unconditioned room the ceiling is going to be warmer in the summer.

In NJ you will find energy audits recommend sealed attics

That’s why attic venting is one of the those topics.

Sealed attic. ………ya, no.

Lots of choices:
Max insulation that makes economical sense*, seal home for less air exchange, vent the attic with your choice or style of venting, just don’t combine venting design/systems.

* economical is a moving target 🎯 so maybe shoot high ?

Two other variables: Then there’s the roofing guys that want the roof deck cool as possible for max shingle life. Plus the winter roof deck temp concerns for ice dam concerns, where roof deck as cold as possible.
