Sounds like a cross connection somewhere. Maybe at a shower or faucet mixer valve that has failed allowing the cross flow. Is it everywhere in the house or just one bathroom?

Age of building and material of pipes?

Old iron pipes corrode on the inside, and corrode enough to stop the flow of water. It happened in a building I own. It is just over 70 years old.

We had to replace some of the pipes, and I anticipate I will have to replace more of them. It was (as the kids say today) a hot mess. No pun intended. It was both hot and cold water to one shower.

Do you mean no water comes out when you turn on the cold faucet, or warm water comes out when you turn on the cold faucet? If it's the latter, it probably is a failed mixer valve on a faucet or in the shower.

Not so fast. My system is a Kinetico. They are well known for going well over 15 years before having to be re-resined. Their guarantee is 10 years, but most have gone well beyond. Last one I heard re-resined was after 25 years. Sure I know this is at the low-end of probability, which is why the smiley face, but it has happened. Just hoping.
