Guys, I need help. Here in Hawaii, we can't get Evaporust. Just recently bitten by the pebble bug, I bought some cheap Plomb ratchets that were in need of lots of TLC. So, mechanically, I got them going real good, but they still look like rusted POS. I don't want to use vinegar, as I don't want to take a chance these things going black. Any suggestions?

check out teken's armstrong thread. he is using clr.

Hi Sk - I did check it out, but I'm a simple building code official, not a chemist. Teken's soup seems more than I can handle. Think of the stupidest guy you know, and then explain it slower to me. :bounce:

Art, it's widely known that nobody with an IQ under 150 can make any sense out of building codes! :lol_hitti

And that's why they hired me. I was told, " you can boggle them with brilliance or baffle them with ********." I guess that's why I do what I do. :lol_hitti

Cruiser, you seem like a nice guy. I bet you're leniant as a codes officer. So back to the ratchets. Are they uniformly rusty? If not then perhaps you can treat the spots with naval jelly. Otherwise slow as molasses might be your other option.

Apple Cider Vinagar. Did not discolor any of my stuff. It does take time to work. So set it and forget it for a week or so.

I'm having a problem believing you can't get EOR. Call the number on this website and ask who the local distributor is.

http://www.evaporust.com/distributor.html

If ANYPLACE needs EOR it would be Hawaii! All that salt air?!?

What about Coca Cola or Naval Jelly?

don't know about coca cola, but if he is afraid of vinegar I think naval jelly is out. it contains a fairly strong acid. don't get any on your hands, thats for sure.

+1

It works. I've used it.

1 part Molasses to 7 parts water. No risk of corroding or etching the part as with Coke, Vinegar, or any type of acid.

Molasses and evaporust are both chelating agents (google / wikipedia is your friend)
