ha ha, nice post, got a good chuckle out of it.

rieferman
fellow TGJ members,

I wonder if anyone, other than me, has had "issues' with sharing their garage space with the "better half"?

Just recently I had made some progress in clearing out floor space in the garage, trying to get organized. Enough to move one of my toys (81 vet) back in. I came home later and found a couch in the garage.:shocking:

Is there a remedy?

Well we have finally been able to get into the attic over the garage. It has been too hot to venture in that space. Cleaned out a lot of stuff and now have room to get that area organized. Big mess in garage is getting bigger as we clean and organize stuff into three groups. Pitch, sell, donate.

Wife bought us a nice stainless half size fridge for cold drinks.:drink:

We plan to sell the larger fridge and gain a little more room to move around the cars.

Did I say Garage Sale! Couch out/car in.

No problem with spouse putting anything in the 1st floor of MY garage....she has half the upstairs to store stuff.

I actually did one/two better. When we built our house, there was a room allowed for, over the garage.(20 x 20) She keeps all of "her" stuff up there. The overflow and yard type stuff is on the first floor.

"My" stuff,(the important stuff) is housed in a detached 28 x 40, with 30' of upstairs storage.. for other "important" stuff :bounce:

:)Hey Tony,

Hows the vet coming along? :D

Any new pics to share?

Wifes been helping me clean out stuff and we are seeing the light. Is it a train coming at me?:shocking:

Hey sstruckguy,

That's a great solution and a great space you got there. I am about built out on my 1/2 acre lot. Would love a three car garage in the back yard but hard to access.:bounce:

LOL thomask the remedy is simple if it is furniture and not supposed to be in my garage it has 24 hours after that I have all rights to make it fit into one of the 95 gallon containers that go to the curb once a week :D.

BTW are you the same Thomask thats been helping Randy over on SFT with his new little place up in Ga :D. I havent been to his new place just the old one although the old one would work for me other than its current location :D. I dont miss Fla .

Hey Rick,

Yes I have been to Randys in GA. It is really something to see. Hope to get up there again in near future when I can. Really enjoy what they have done in building a new home and shop. I did not do much but it is great to be with Randy and Carol and hope to help again.

You need to see this in person, it is over the top.

I guess you heard of their coach.

Hey Thomask yes I have been a member of SFT since the beginnings so I have read about Randy's coach was a terrible thing to happen but I was glad He and Carol and the Pups were home and not in the coach on the road when it happend . I have stopped in at his place in Fla this past summer while running my MIL's stuff back and forth LOL. I will make it down to the new shop/house in Ga eventually ( maybe for the housewarming ) LOL.

Tony,

I was just up in your neck of the woods at Lake Guntersville State Lodge a couple weeks ago. What a great place.

Looking forward to seeing your vet coming together. I have always loved the C3 shark. When I was in high school (1969) it was the dream car of mine.:D

On a planet with alot of really Stupid people
Looks like too much household **** in the garage

I believe that is called Reality, IE. The Real World !
It sure isn't hard, despite anyones best efforts to accumilate "stuff" in your garage.
I can sure agree with the other members who suggested that a shed to keep ones "Yard equipment" out of ones garage space.
The reality of the world is. No matter how big a space you have, you will have more "stuff" to put in it then fits. It just way to easy to say. I am not ready to throw that away just yet. But for the most part, Thats just what one needs to do.
Boy, do I need to follow my own advice.
I have homeowners whos, homes I take care of, always throwing things away appliances, interior furniture, exterior furniture etc. and it's all great stuff, unfortunatly I don't have room for it all.
I need to plan on heck of a yard sale !

Thomask, I think your garage clean up is looking great. Congratulations on your retirement. :)

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the good words. I agree 100%. It is a shame what some people throw out that can be used by someone. That is really what recycling can do for this world and put less stress on landfills.

Just a thought, but I have put stuff by the road with a "FREE" sign on it from time to time. Somebody can use a little something.

Long time ago I went to see George Carlin. That was before he turned mean and nasty. He did a skit on stuff and how it grows. I still hurt from laughing.

A fellow named Leon Redbone opened for him. Stole the show, IMO.

thomask, great work. Looking organized already, 'course it looked more organized than mine after I've cleaned up.

Hey Dave,

We are getting lots of stuff out of attic, garage and house into the driveway and set up for garage sale. If it does not sell then it is going to Goodwill or in the dumpster. We took five coats today to our local Blue Ribbon Cleaners for their winter coat drive.

We were able to get two carts for auto detailing/oil/fluids organized. See before/after pics.

That baby stroller is now in attic awaiting newest addition in March.:)

Gave the coffee table and a matching end table to an old school friend. White bookcase fell apart. Now l have TOH/vet magazines to recycle.

I'm feeling better each day. One little bit at a time. Golly, if I just had a fork lift?

.........BEFORE...... ....SW CORNER......... AFTER........

Well you never know what you will find when doing a makeover.

A family was living in the garage back in the spring and had moved by the time I found this. They were great neighbors, never made a peep.

See pics of a bird nest that was hiding in my hat and cap rack.

Yes Rick :bounce:

I really hate to have to tell everyone this,:(

Cleaning a garage is a journey, not a destination.:lol_hitti

Good luck:lol2:

Thomask,
I am not shocked nor surprised you found an unoccupied birds nest in your hat rack.
What I found stunning and unusual in that photo was that you own a red cowboy hat - in velvet - that has gold trim.
Do say it went off to the Goodwill yesterday... even if it didn't, just tell us all it did.

Cheers,

Hey E46M3

The cowboy hat was burgundy felt, not red velvet and they were given to Jaycee Members that helped our community many years ago and yes it, like Elvis, has left the building.

Hey nice BMW.

My appologies sir,
"burgundy felt" + "Jaycee Members" + "helped our community"= not a pimp.
All is well - and the world now returns to spinning on its axis. I did not fathom it was a gift of appreciation. Just trying to watch your back...
Thank you for the valid explination.
Carry on.

Shed for yard stuffs.

Then shut off all the lights and run from one corner of the garage to the other barefoot. After a few broken toes and a few new words you'll decide to overhaul it once and for all.

VIPER,

Great suggestion, but I don't want any broken bones.:shocking:

I have moved all garden stuff to my 8x8 shed and I am moving stuff to the attic. I am also adding more shelf space and an additional four foot shop light so I can see better upstairs.

Goal is "nothing in garage touching the floor that does not roll".

EVERYONE: Update, Garage Sale went off as planned. Weather was little less than ideal but we did sell a good bit of stuff. Garage space is getting better, I can see more of the floor.

Also for the christmas items, consider getting a bunch of identical plastic storage totes and get that (and any other "annual use" type of stuff) up into the attic, if you can.

my garage is a typical 1960's 2 car, just about enough room for a car, riding mower ect. we have nearly 1500 sq ft of basement, that's mostly unused. x-mas stuff goes in the red and green storage totes under the stairs, halloween stuff in orange/black totes in the laundry room. my small (14x26) "hobby room" has a small wookworking bench, 7feet of wooden bench for my reloading presses, an old hi-fi cabinet that has powder, primers and several thousand rounds of loaded ammo, 2 25lb Co2 fire extingishers and one wall with shelves for my collectable stuff.
i rent a 36x40 steel building about 5 minutes from the house where i keep my offroad truck and a lot of my tools. We live in toen and zoning frowns on untagged vehicles sitting around. no room in the garage here for anything else

Hey crewchief888, It must be great having an extra 36x40 foot building to store stuff. That would hold our 34 foot motorcoach and whaler center console boat. My wife could then get in the driveway for a change without a parking problem.:)

GOOD NEWS the couch was delivered to the Christmas Connection today and the T Top is back inside.xmas

Keep tuned in as I really think we will see two cars in the garage before 2010, I hope.:hellobye:

I pretty much have getting organized licked, the secret is piles, lots of piles, and little paths (there's 2 complete motorcycles and 1 in pieces buried somewhere in there).

Hi there Rick,

I admit I was with Randy, I did sneak out of state while wife was out of the house. He had the split systems running yesterday. It was like toast in the new great room. They run so quiet you have to get next to one to even hear air moving. The place is really coming along since I was last up there. Had a great time.

I want one of those splits for my 20 x 20 to keep cool in the Florida Heat, although we are forcast for freezing this week.

Believe it or not I had cleared room for our second car but due to weather today we had to move all our potted plants in the other half of garage. Well maybe when it warms back up for the 2nd car. I did rent space at the coast for the boat. That will make egress much easier.

Hey what size unit would I need for my garage?

Hey Micky O,

Trust me, I have been there. Those piles will get smaller if you use the three step program.

Keep, toss, donate.

Good luck, you have a great start there and you will probably find neat stuff you forgot you had.

Thomask a 1 ton unit would more than handle your garage . You could get a heat pump setup like Randy's for the 2 weks a year it drops below 50* :D. I am planning to do a 1 ton heat pump system on my garage this spring myself and my garage is just slightly larger than yours.I also understand the plants :D I have a pile of plants in here right now from out around the pond as SWMBO didnt want them all in the house and we couldnt leave the tropicals out next to the pond in 20-30* weather :D.

the key for us non-retired guys is to try and stay somewhat organized. about twice a year, I clean stuff up some (sometimes I do better than other times)... usually occurs when i put the Vette away in the fall or get it out in the spring.

in '06 my father died, and had 14 years of stuff in his 30x48 shed (shed built in 92)... so in summer of '07 I spent about a week and a half cleaning it out and organizing it with help of my Unlce (dads younger brother). It was very theraputic for me. we hauled out 100's of lbs of steel and some aluminum to the local recycler... gave us just enough money to put new tires on the trailer

my goal is to not let **** pile up too high- if just for the sake of whoever has to pick up after i go...

Hey Rick,

Randy said you would know what I needed. Those systems are just what would fit in my space. I may need to insulate the garage door as it faces east.

A garage down here with AC/heat would could put me in the VIP category. hahaaa

How far away can you place the outside unit?

I found a place in Tampa that sells wholesale to the public.

Fish Man,

Thanks for the reply.

I can relate and do agree it can be therapeutic. You just feel much better organized, I am married to a librarian. She keeps reminding me this.

Good luck to you and I am staying busy during cold weather cleaning up my home office.

HEY when you retire you will wonder how did you ever have time to work. It is true. Things get done by busy people not people with lots of time it seems.
I just can't explain it though.

Tell us about your VET.:)

MICKEY, Sorry but I left one out and that is to have a "sell pile".

If you want to sponsor a "Garage Sale" you might make a few bucks and clean stuff out at the same time. Just be sure you are ready cause folks start showing up early, real early, like the night before.:)

Thomask honestly they come factory with a 15 foot line and I would stick to that . You can get a set of guages off of evilbay and a vacuum pump and do the whole install yourself that way if you leave it with the factory lines so you wont have to add refrigerant to it as it comes with a factory charge in it .

When we moved into our house 2 years ago I told the wife the house is yours the garage is mine. The only thing from the house in the garage is the deep freezer. It has worked so far the only person besides me with stuff in the garage is my 2 year old daughter she wins all the time since she hangs out in the garage with daddy. The shed idea was the best thing I did got all the lawn stuff out and made a lot of space for me in the garage.

If you really need to make space I am in Jaxs and I will come any place you want to remove that vette from your driveway.
