No luck in forum search - looking for tips on garage plans

I've done some google searching and even searched keywords on this forum looking for some straight forward garage plans or places to find them. I've turned up justgarageplans.com and similar sites but I am wondering where did members here put together their plans for a particular garage?

I'm less than handy when it comes to construction projects, so I honestly have no idea where to start and would like to avoid having custom plans drawn up unless that's the only way. For size I am not even sure yet, currently thinking I would do 24 - 28 feet in width and 36 - 50 feet in depth. That part really depends on what my lot would fit the best once consideration for the septic system, landscape, and layout were addressed.

For usage I want to get my motorcycle projects out of my attached garage as well as add a lathe and mill for machining projects. My wish would be to have a roll up door high enough to fit my boat inside on the trailer during the winter for update work but that's around 10 feet high. My neighborhood requires style approval and the structure has to be similar construction as my house which means a brick exterior. This will prohibit me from building a huge steel building just being done with all I want from that.

So where should I begin my research?
Thanks,
Brandon

Have you tried the free planner that they show right on this site? I just used it to plan out my new garage, and it worked great. It was a huge help. If you take a few min, there's all kinds of stuff you can place in the garage to help plan the size, such as drill press(mill), compressors, etc. It doesn't print out plans, but it will definitely help you decide on the size, and you can't even get started until you know what size you want. Here's the link.

No problem, I was turning my brain to mush trying to figure out what size I could live with until I found that handy little sight. I liked the way I could change the size of the cars to exactly what I have, and change the size of all the other stuff as well. I laid out for all my shelving, benches, air compressor and mill. I wasn't able to go ahead and starty my garage until I could figure out the size, so it helped to get me going.

If you are looking for garage plans with oversized overhead doors for your boat take a look at these 2 car garage plans.

Unless you are looking for garage plans with living quarters, most of the plans you will find are pretty straight forward to build. Some garage plans come with step-by-step instructions that might help with the project. You'll just have to look at the individual plans to see if they are included. Here is one example of garage plans with step-by-step instructions. There are also instructional kits available, a framing kit, a plumbing kit and an electrical kit, that might be useful.

84 Lumber had these plans for $10-12. I used them as the basis for drawing up my own plans. I put the garage door on the gable end (requiring a laminated beam) and used pre-made trusses. The truss company gave me the engineer signed plans for these and I used the printout design from Home depot (free) to submit to the building permit office.

I got exactly what I wanted in the design. No compromise there.

Good Luck
