No banter at all - negative or positive. Only pertinent questions. Im gonna reformat the classifieds next week i think.

pertinent to who? i am in no way condoning bashing or complaining about what is in an add. i am very curious about how you may reformat the classifieds. are you open to suggestion, needs or wants or will this be some drastic overnight change? i do think it strange that a person could get banned for saying positive things as stated in your first post.:headscrat

Roger that. I will begin enforcing the policy immediately.

bull, before you drop the hammer and go all hard *** on us. why don't you hold off on the hard stuff until ryan reformats and gets his new rules and regs up. i am sure some people are paying no attention to this thread and are unaware of changes.. if something needs to be addressed go for it but i don't see anybody that is out of hand right now.

SK, I'm not a hard-*** by nature. I will simply be cleaning up the current posts that have commentary in them; I will not be issuing infractions for innocent remarks. But, once the rule becomes well-established I will have to if people are just flagrantly ignoring it.

Aside from the reformat, the new rule/reg is up, in this thread that Ryan stickied.

Fellas... Sorry for my absence in the matter. Somehow my notification got turned off...

In any case, this is a classified section - not a discussion forum. Comments such as "that rules" or "that *****" just disrupts the flow of the classifieds by bumping posts up that shouldn't be, etc...

Do you fellas think it's rational to only allow posts that are pertinent to the ad at hand? You know, stuff like:

"You didn't mention it, but is that set SAE or metric?"

or

"What condition is the handle in?"

or

"Will you ship internationally?"

.......

To me, this seems like a pretty reasonable expectation.

Thoughts?

i am all for prohibiting the bad comments. they do detract from the issue. i don't see any harm from positive comments that may help the seller move his item. especially those that may say they have had a good experiance with the seller or some other valuable information. if the mods see too much chatter that goes way off i understand trimming it but i don't see much value in banning or punishing people who stray off track. it happens in every other part of this place so i am not sure how you can keep it out of classifieds.

I definitely dont see any issues with the above referenced questions, With that said i didnt see any issues with someone plugging a seller from a past experience etc.. Im not sure if you've noticed but GJ has been getting a ALOT of NEW members who have come here to SELL only. Its nice to know that i have a good chance of having a positive experience with a guy who has 20 posts. Again, I can see both sides of this issue as it does bump ads and there are a few members who do stray outside the current guidlines and Maybe new rules might prevent these occurences and Maybe not. Good Luck..

Ryan,

Are you going to mimic the way you have done on the HAMB site classifieds? I know the OP can bump their own ads there after so many days. Are you going to shorten that time frame here? Just wondering because tools usually don't stay up for sale as long as cars do.

I think Ryan or Bull need to ban me from the Classified effective immediately! You have no idea how much I have spent on this silly thing since becoming a member. This place is like my crack house.

Just kidding about the banning part. :)

What is the bump rule over there? Here, the current rule is no self-bumping within 48 hours.

I can't get that high. Is 72 hours equal to three days? You know how us Southern boys can't count....

After thinking about this issue ive come to the conclusion that the classifieds pretty much run themselves outside the occasional guy that violates the current rules of badgering a seller with thoughtless posts. I would leave the rules alone and start disciplining based on members actions in regards to the current rules. I think everyone knows whats apropriate and what isnt, If they dont we have plenty of admins who frequent this site daily and could remedy the sitsuation.

My 2 cents..

Over on the HAMB, it was always, "Man, I wish I were closer but here a BTTT for ya!"

The way I see it, the following type of comments would NOT be allowed because they BUMP AN AD FOR NO USEFUL PURPOSE:

"Hey, I love your avatar!"
"Man, I wish they were metric!"
"SK wrenches rule!"
"I can get those for cheaper at Sears"

Hiball is right (or is that Wright?), anyhow, I'll get serious. Even though I am pretty new here and probably shouldn't be tossing out my opinion on policy, I'll leave a couple comments.

Most everyone here does a great job of being civil and decent to one another. I hate to see well-meaning members given infractions for positive, and for the most part, constructive-to-the-seller banter.

Let us take care of ourselves, and if someone does do something blatantly negative, act on them accordingly.

Thanks for listening.

How about phrases like:

"Hey, got the tools. Thanks for shipping them so quick"

Hey, the tools came to day. You did a great job packaging them"...

If you're going to update the rules, it sure would be nice to have a "manatory photo of the actual item for sale" rule. Photos can certainly cut down on unneeded conversation...

Is it now verboten to ask what a tool is for? I've done this, I've seen others do this, and I find it very educational not be a pro. I thought it could be useful for others who might looks and be interested. "Wow, they make a tool just for that? I'll take it." Can I please have clarification if I can ask or not? Thanks.

Actually, those posts are annoying to me. Why can't the buyer of the tools just PM the seller and tell him he got the tools? I do that. I don't need to open a thread where I think some tools might be for sale only to find out Billy got his package. :headscrat

I agree in principle with the picture rule, but in most cases people post one anyway. Gotta agree with Hiball that the classifieds police themselves for the most part.

My line of thinking was it gives props to the seller since there is no other method of seller feedback. If we added the iTrader add-on it would help a lot.

The problem is it bumps a thread that in a lot of cases doesn't need to be bumped to the top of the list, especially if the tools have all been sold already. The better option would be to add your comment to the seller's feedback thread - if they have one. See Rickster's thread for an example:

That would be a pertinent question, so it would be allowed.

I guess i dont get the whole "bumping" sitsuation, Does anyone here have a issue with threads getting bumped? I dont see it causing someone to lose out on a sale etc.. If a tools is priced within reason it doesnt last long regardless of what page its on, in my opinion. I believe the issue at hand is people being disrespectful to other members ads, Even then its Random and if warnings and then infractions where handed out it would eventually weed out the trouble makers. I know our admins do a good job of deleting troublesome threads in all areas but im not sure how much hand slapping is done. Again, Its a shame that as adults cant follow the rules, but this is the world we live in.

It may not be evident, but bumping was a big problem. Bull and I both have been involved in a bunch of issues trying to keep the peace and give everyone a fair selling space, which resulted in the updated rules from last year.

Yeah.. I guess i dont see it. I Buy/Sell in the classifieds weekly if not daily and have never felt slighted by any communication in a thread that leaped anyones including mine. :headscrat

Another issue that we modified the rule on and that is becoming a problem again is when a seller creates a separate thread for each tool he is selling. I just merged about five into one tonight, and there is another two or three from one poster that just popped up within the last hour. I see this as a waste of space.

Yep, you got it. That was/is the bigger culprit. So combine multiple ads from a seller that bumps them all the time = pushes everything waaay down the list.

I try to keep that to a mininum personally, as i listed some tools twice today but merged them into 1 thread, I normally go back and clear old ads also to keep confusion to a mininum. I agree as we have a few sellers who will bump there auctions every couple weeks which is fine but its normally 10-15 different threads. Still dont see a individual thread being inavertently bumped as a issue from both sides of the table.

Exactly. It's a real pain to go through the classifieds only to read posts of someone thanking someone else for following through on the transaction. Well, that's what they were supposed to do, isn't it?

I only need to hear about it if someone doesn't follow through on the transaction.

Amen. Nothing worse than seeing five posts that clutter up the classifieds, when they could've easily been combined into one posting. That way, potential buyers can see everything the guy is selling, and there's a chance they'll buy more b/c then they can combine shipping.

bull, ryan. just a thought, why don't you take a couple of the big sellers, bang your heads together and come up with some new guidelines. a committee of sorts. i really don't think some of the idle chatter is the big problem. the problem is the rude or condescending comments. just as at a live auction, the light banter can be helpful. hiball and wrenchr would be two that come to mind. i have done business with both as have many others.

I don't have any personal agenda, so I am fine just toeing whatever line Ryan draws in the sand. I am sure he is reading and considering all comments posted here, and when he makes his final call then I will do what I can to implement the change.

it has nothing to do with having an agenda. ask some questions. make some suggestions. pass your input along. make the changes and hopefully things will work better. you do buying and selling, so don't tell me you don't have any opinions. if ryan trusts you as a mod than he will trust your opionions.

Basically what I am saying is that I respect the fact that this is not my personal space; I am a volunteer here, and when I signed up for the gig I told Ryan I would be happy to enforce his policies.

Yes, I have opinions and express them often enough. Eric and I have discussed the classifieds before, and made some changes to the rules.

You and the other people in this thread are tugging on Ryan's ear right now. I am sure he is listening.

I am... I've talked to quite a few folks through pm on the subject... I think we are headed in the right direction.

Banter is fine... so long as it is productive... But I don't want the classifies becoming a discussion forum. That's not what they are here for.

So, bad experiences or positive experiences with a seller isn't pertinant to an ad? Should we start a seperate thread in the Free Parking section to air our differences with a seller or a buyer? Curious minds need some direction...

I thought the same. I hate to say but if someone is selling a snap-on ratheting wrench set that we already have and dont want to buy we cant just comment and say "whoever is buys this is geting a great deal this is a great set I love the way it works" or if someone is selling a stanely ratcheting wrench we cant say "hay man whoever buys this may want to be carefull its not fore everyday use its proably better off for a homeowner or someone on a basic leve".......sorry but I just think that rule is messed up

How would you feel if you was selling a tool and someone posted in your classified that the tool was Junk and not capable of being used everyday? Its common sense, The classified section is not the place to debate a tools worth or your opinion of it. The rules are FINE, If you dont have any interest in the item, Move on. Its the people who like to throw there judgement around on a tools value that get us to the point where we have to have special rules because they lack common sense.

Dunno... I like seeing the pecking order on Items for sale.

Yes, I want to know if someone is ahead of me for an item. If I really want the item, or part of a lot someone is buying, I can always ask the person who's buying it if they're open to selling it later.

In general, I think positive comments are welcome. Negative comments can go back where they came from.
