Noisy AC Vents

My house has two AC/furnace units - one on each end. One is a "conventional" and the other is a heat pump - which I hate but it is what it is.

On the heat pump end of the house, there are two bedrooms. Each has a single register. The air blows through them very fast. It is noisy enough to be a nuisance and even a detriment to sleep.

I don't want to increase the air to each room, but is there a way to reduce the exit velocity at the registers? Can I just put bigger registers on the same ducts with adapters or something?

Thanks!

Bigger registers with the same ducts won't help much. You would really need to increase the size of the ducts. But, you say you don't want additional airflow in the bedrooms. You could add other registers and ducts in other areas - maybe a new register in the hallway, or increase the size of any ducts to other rooms that could use additional airflow.

You should be able to slow the fan speed down at the unit. Some have 3 to 4 speeds and you can generally set which speed is used in AC mode and which is used in heat mode. Slowing down the fan speed will affect all ducts and registers on the system.

In my experience, the style of register cover can affect the noise level. Specifically, any cover that has louvers that change the direction of the air are the loudest. Pull the register cover, and see if that makes a difference, then experiment with different covers.

That depends on where the noise is coming from.... the ducts or the diffuser itself. Changing the diffuser alone will certainly make a chance if the issue is a diffuser that's running at a higher velocity.

Slowing down the whole unit will reduce the airflow from the unit, so it could potentially cause some other issues.
