Non contact 12/110 v tester

Do you guys know of any non contact testers that will detect a hot wire from a car as well as a hot wire in a house? I bought this one because it said dual band and thought it might work. It works on house electricity but not on my truck.

Look into santronics model 3315 it is a DC voltage model

I guess I don't know enough about the differences between ac versus dc to know if this is even possible but Im looking for a non contact tester. I don't want to have to hook up a ground and actually pierce the insulation on a car wire.

I've used a household one to see if a plug was firing. A friend told me that you could and I had to try it. Just hold it against the side of a plug wire and it will sense it firing.

It worked on !y plugs too. I'm looking to be able to detect the presence of 12v tho. I'm not sure but something tells me spark plugs carry more than that right? I just want to know if for example my headlights are getting power if the bulbs are out.

You do NOT want to use that on spark plug wires...that is several thousand volts. Timing lights work well on plug wires.

Use caution when using those non-contact testers. Not always accurate....especially with AC. The most common issue is telling you it has voltage when there is nothing there. You need to know the difference between real voltage and induced voltage.

If you have a volt meter, just stick it into the bulb socket, no need to pierce a wire.

Yes, DC ONLY !

It requires that you pierce the insulation.

I have NEVER seen a low voltage (12V) DC non-contact voltage detector.
