Non contact tachometer

I have to work on a few older tractors that my timing light won't pick up so I can't use it for a tachometer to get accurate RPM's. So, what is an accurate non contact tachometer. I saw the Snap-On one in the flier but I am not yet sold.

I have this. It comes with a little case and quite a bit of retroreflective tape so it can pick up a tach signal. It works scarily good, to the point where I can get a tach reading over 6 feet away from whatever I'm measuring.

I checked the accuracy against a 60Hz strobe, and it read dead-nuts 3600 RPM, which is exactly what it should.

Has all the basic features hold, avg, min, max, self shut off, back light, counts etc.

Works fine I use it often and I'm good with many of the UNI T products. I have a few different ones. YMMV

There is also a UT372 model has more features but for more money too

There are quite a few different ones found on Amazon ranging from sub $20 to way over $100. Looks like the one RTR used is $160 on Amazon but also is USA

Oh as for tape


I highly recommend a roll of the Reflective "DUCK" tape.

Works great plus its cheap and easy to get.

And you will have more tape than you'll ever need

Oppama make good tach's they have a number of models. Fast-tach are also popular. If using the tach for tuning a fast 'refresh' rate is important. They vary from .2 of a second to 3 or 4 seconds but .5 of a second or less is what I'd want. Oppama are also good to deal with for warranty problems, they stand behind their products.
