I have an application where I need to grip but not mar...1.25" diameter smooth solid rod surface.

My current approach is a split shaft collar and pipe wrench. I would like a go to tool to spec out for the job.

It looks like Knipex and others offer a model that somewhat does the job but the leverage appears to be minimal.

I was wondering if anyone has seen anything like a pipe wrench with soft jaws out there?

I could throw some pliers condoms on the Cobra's but not too sure how well this would grip.

Is anyone aware of what the type of plastic is used on the jaws of non marring pliers and where I could locate something similar to make my own?

Strap wrench ive tried doesnt handle the small diameter well. Ill give leather a go. Ive tried various gasket rubbers and the pipe wrench or pliers chews right through. Looking at giving it some serious torque. Its in a precarious position and its generally ladder work and i really want something solid that wont slip.

How about wrapping it in some rubber similar to that of a strap wrench. Then hit it with the pipe wrench. Maybe even take a strap wrench apart. It should be thick enough to protect the pipe.

Knipex plier wrench has a smooth jaw. And you can put allot of leverage on them. That is what I used for plumbing work around the house on chromed and brass fittings. When I really want to protect the fitting I put 2 strips of leather to add for extra protection.

one approach I have used successfully is an oversized strap wrench and put multiple turns of the strap around the shaft. Not all straps will do this and I have mucked up a strap using this technique. Your mileage may vary
