Looking for an aftermarket scanner than can handle ABS bleeding on my fleet: 2010 Toyota, 2006/2012 Mazda, 08 Ford. Especially the 08 Ford.

Has anyone found a non subscription based bi-directional scanner that as of 2019 can do CanBus Japanese cars ABS bleeding?

I’ve called around to the local shops and as soon as I mentioned ABS bleeding all directed me to the dealer.

Looking to spend up to $2k, don’t care about any functionality beyond the ABS.

Any help or first hand accounts of a working unit with this capability appreciated.

For the Ford vehicles, you get a $30 USB ELM adapter and download Forscan. It can do everything from keyless entry pin retrieval, abs bleeding, module programming and a bunch of other things.

Interesting, would that allow you to access/read codes/reset Advancetrac?
I believe standard Forscan is free?

I don't know about Advancetrac features, check the Forscan forum for more datapoints.

Yes, it's free. I think they have a nominal fee if you want to program keys.

Looked into ForScan. They put a lot of trust that $30 adapter actually working and not being a fake clone. I’m very concerned about bricking my ECU if I get a bad cable, not to mention the connection problems, and having to track down a good working XP laptop with a good battery and good product key and needing advanced computer skills to get the software to load.

I looked into a $500 Mongoose cable with ForScan but apparently the Moongoose has issues with Ford bidirectional functions that is doesn’t have for Toyota etc.

I’m looking for a higher dollar solution that has no issues with functionality and can be used for a Ford (with a Mazda engine/trans) / Mazda / Toyota.

I use this cable:

With Windows 10. I don't know why you'd need XP. I haven't used it for an ECU, but it programs an RCS without issue.

Good luck in your search.

I use forscan with an obdlink mx. Probably programmed around 50 vehicles with no problems. Haven’t done anything with abs though

Why are you using the ABS bleed function? Any/all cars can have the fluid bled without this.

The infamous example of chevy truck automated bleed is a red hearing. You can get a better pedal in less time, ignoring the auto-bleed feature on those.

I am physically replacing the ABS unit in the Ford. It needs a ABS bleed. I replaced the ABS unit in the Toyota previously and an not impressed with the brake pedal quality after without a proper bleed. The other units are icing on the cake if I can get them to work.

Autel 906 should do all of that. I'd suggest disconnecting the battery in the ford/toyota, letting the systems die, and bleeding normally. That's my go-to in the aforementioned chevy trucks. A vacuum bleeder plus pumping the pedal while doing so is a good way to get an initial pedal.

I once had Foxtel NT630, it has ABS bleeding feature. However, it only came with software for 1 make (which was Honda), for multiple car brands, you may need buy software separately.

Will definitely look into the Autel if I can find a vendor such as amazon that sells them with a return policy. My plan is to unbox a given scanner, see if it does the ABS bleed and if not back to the vendor it goes. Thanks for the tips. The Toyota system is Lucas Sumitomo which is a bear to find any info on and retails for $3500 so used replacement pumps have had to suffice.

FWIW: getting a decent pedal, then having the dealer do whatever bleed you like, would likely be much cheaper.

Probably true. But my Mazda and Ford dealer options in town are terrible and quoted me nearly $400 to do a bleed with the scanner or $170 to do with a basic pump. I’m at the point where I don’t care about recouping my money or coming out ahead. I just want to avoid the dealer at almost any cost. If you live in a small town outside of CA you are probably looking at much better dealers and lower prices but for me buying the tool is almost always a better option.

Yeah I mean most of the ones I’ve seen advertised only come with GM anything else is extra with no guarantees. I’m looking for something out of the box that claims it can do my brands. That way if it fails to work I can just send back claiming false advertising without buying additional manufacturers hoping it will then work.
