Non-Overhead Hurricane-Rated Garage door

I have a small single car garage, and the only blessing I have is a high, pitched ceiling. I am going to take advantage of that with a full-height lift (plan to get the BendPak fullrise scissor lift- open center, and no poles around the car in what is going to be a cramped space).

I will have to replace the existing overhead garage door to accomplish this. The replacement needs to do only 3 things:

1. Not interfere with the lift height.
2. Be hurricane rated (the stronger the better)
3. Look nice for happy wife.

I am looking into rollup doors, but I would have to figure out if there is enough room for the mechanism on the inside of the garage.

I am also looking into the bi-fold doors (like hangar doors) or carriage style doors.

My problem is there aren't prices on any of these, and the wind-load capabilities seem questionable. Some have a metal bar that you put in place for a storm- not that it is a big deal to do this, but it makes me worry about the strength of the door. The rest of my house has steel shutters and the existing door has probably 8 steel reinforcement bars across it.

Has anyone dealt with this?

Where are you located?

We can do track that will follow the pitch of the roof on a sectional overhead door and keep almost all of your overhead space, and they can be done to withstand just about any wind.

I am located in Miami. I believe that to get full insurance deductions the door needs to be 150mph rated, but I need to confirm that. I just know that my current door meets the standard.

Do you have any pictures of how what you are describing works? Any idea on the cost?

I will measure the door when I get home tonight, but I can tell you it is pretty standard looking for a single car in terms of width and height.

Here is a scale drawing I made, but unfortunately I didn't measure the garage door yet, so it currently does not show those dimensions. I will update the model tonight.

Like I said, its tight in there, but I am going to make it work.

Ah yes, Miami-Dade county. You are looking at needing a door with a design pressure rating of about 55 psf as well as impact resistance. There are many doors out there that will meet those requirements.

As far as track goes, a web search turned this up for a diagram. What you are looking for is called roof-pitch track. It does increase the cost a little, but it definitely gains you a lot of space and you can **** it up pretty close to the ceiling in most instances.
