Seems I saw this somewhere, but can’t remember now. Does anyone make a tape that doesn’t leave a gooey mess when it is removed? Thanks

Wiring harness tape.

Yep ! "Harness tape" is the same PVC tape with NO adhesive ! Usually 1" wide (instead of 3/4"). Actually more expensive than 3M Scotch "33" or "88".

Be careful when shopping ! Some people call cloth tape embedded with a super sticky adhesive "harness tape" (they do you this INSIDE harnesses for splicing). Some call standard adhesive backed PVC tape "harness tape".

Real harness tape is removable with no residue and is re-usable (although it is stretched out).

3M 130C is a "linerless" (no adhesive) rubber splicing tape. It will adhere to itself but not anything else. Good but $$$

I have used it all, basically use the 10 roll 5$ stuff from the box stores. I used to be fussy when I started out, the expensive stuff is a little better and there are about 2 flavors of th3e cheaper stuff. I picked it up against some 3M the other day, if it wasn't labeled it would have been harder to tell apart.

Bigger difference I find in tape is actually auto body and masking. Something in the patent that even Martin Senior cant seem to quite copy. Duct tape is a bit similar to electric in the sense that there are a couple types and thickness which seems more important than brand.

I use the cheapest 99 cent roll stuff I can find....for holding stuff together when I haul it in the back of my truck, like siding trim, gutter/downspouts and drip edge. It works great for that and I'll buy it a sleeve at a time.

However, when it comes to electrical work, I only use (as a DIY'er) 3M 33+. . . . it's the benchmark of electrical tape in my opinion. Step-dad said it's the only stuff they would use at the local General Electric.
