Is anyone using a non-standard size overhead door for their garage for access to equipment? I am in the process of planning my new garage and was thinking of adding a smaller overhead door on the back of my garage for access to lawn tractor, snow blower, etc. I have not had any luck finding a door smaller than the standard 8x7. What are my other options apart from an overhead door? I would want the door to be at least 48" wide. Thanks!

Keep looking, I'm sure they are available. Many houses located near golf courses have small overhead doors for their golf carts. Another option is a rollup door like on commercial storage units. The local Menards carries them.

Where are you located? I may be able to point you toward someone. We make doors in just about any inch increment and most any 3" increment in height.

Check with OverHead Door http://overheaddoor.com/Pages/LandingPage.aspx
I know they offer narrower doors, a friend has one that is approx. 6ft wide.
I have 5 nearly new OverHead Door doors, very pleased with their doors and service.

As was mentioned above, the door manufacturers can shuffle panel heights around too get you very close to the exact size you need, they don't just come in 12" increments.
One of my doors is an oddball size, a standard 7ft door would have worked but would have had issues. The Overhead guys set me up with 2 slightly shorter panels that make it fit much nicer, and since they split the difference with 2 panels you really have to look at the door to see that it's different.

Most any of them will do custom sizes, you just have to ask them about it. You're just not going to walk into Lowes and walk out with a custom size door that day. There are minimum sizes, but you should be fine with what you're looking to do.
