Hi all,

I came across a great deal on some Paslode 6d (2.0 x 0.113) framing nails (galvanized):

https://www.homedepot.com/p/100351706

I was thinking I could save these for when I needed them - but now I'm wondering where they are used!

After looking into it, it looks like 8d nails (2.5") are the minimum required for sheathing.

So where are 6d framing nails properly used?

Thanks for reading

I use 6d nails wherever 8d nails seem too big and 4d nails seem too small, for example, 3/8" T-111 siding, wood shingles, some types of clapboards, toe-nailing 3/4" material, 3/8" shear paneling, etc. I wouldn't consider a 6d nail a framing nail.

They were used to apply wall sheathing in years past, but as I recall the spec was changed to eight penny.

I am using up my NOS 6d nails to fasten fence pickets to rails.

I saw a video where a guy was shooting 40d (or was it 50d ?) nails through 2x4 stood up on edge that he was using a purlins. Clearly the purlin is much stronger that way.
Required a special gun !

6D nails are normally used for applying 1/2 plywood gusset to a site build truss. Unless you want to clench a longer nail. It takes a bukoo bunch of them, more that you would think. I built one truss on site where an addition attached to the existing house. I didn't purchase one as I didn't know how it was going to sit until I have the walls up and ran a string across. I though my arm was going to fall off after driving that many nails

Thanks for all the replies guys!

It sounds like since sheathing code was updated to use 8d nails at a minimum, 6d nails are now used for more specialized tasks that I'm unlikely to tackle.
