Hi all.
I'm new here - first post. I've built up my basement shop (mostly woodworking) by rebuilding old machinery. I recently picked up an old Charles Parker vise (mode 383-1/2). It's a swivel base and swivel jaw model, which I'm really glad to have. (see attachment)
This is not the first block of rust I've dragged home, though I've never come across a part so difficult to remove. The tapered pin that holds the swivel jaw parallel to the front jaw (that nub sticking up to the left of the jaws) doesn't want to come out. It should lift right out so that you can swivel the jaw. I tried prying it up from the top - no dice.
I've removed the base and the nut, which allowed me to slip a steel rod through the center hole in the bottom of the casting and into the through hole in an attempt to punch the pin out from the bottom side. After soaking it in penetrating oil for a couple of days with occasional whacks on the steel rod, all I have to show for it is an oily mess and a bent steel punch rod. The tapered pin won't budge. Any suggestions???
Patiently keep up with more oil and daily hammering? Heat it up? I could drop the whole thing in an electrolysis bath???
With all the vise threads on this forum, hopefully someone else has dealt with this. Thanks in advance,
paulh
