Norseman Drill Bits - Which Set?

Time to buy a decent set of drill bits for general use around the house (wood, sheet metal, etc). I keep hearing good things about Norseman.

Is this the set that would be recommended?

I have a set of those and fully satisfied. I use them only when necessary, meaning I have plenty of cheap to midrange bits I use daily for most jobs. When I come across something very hard to drill through, that is when I take these out. I usually use some kind of cutting oil or drilling compound, and they never let me down.

That's a great set of drill bits (anything from Norseman, Viking, Chicago Latrobe will be), but there is no need for those when drilling wood and other softer materials.
Use a cheaper set of bits for those tasks and bring out the nice bits for drilling harder materials / metals.

I have the big Norseman magnum set. Really nice bits - but I will say this - out of the box they are almost too sharp when drilling metal by hand. They dig in very hard on soft metal and pull the drill away from you. They're fine in a drill press though.

That Norseman set will work just fine for you.

Consider the Norseman magnum mechanic set; slightly shorter bits and 3 flats on the larger sizes

I have the same kit you’re looking at but in a metal index. It’s what I use at work (commercial glazier). I also ordered about 15 each replacements of my most common used sizes (1/2”, 5/16”, 1/4”, etc) so that I can keep my index stocked with sharp bits (I encounter anything from aluminum to 1/4” steel repeatedly). I’m happy with them!

Only problem with the Magnum set is the case is made backward…it goes large in the front row, small bits are in the rear

It is a good set and if you have one set it should cover all purposes. Ones like this will do all chores where less expensive will have a hard time causing the need to buy more sets. I may lean a little more Viking but we use a lot of Norseman since we find it easier to get replacements as they get worn out. With the age on some of the indexes we have replacement bits is a consideration. I do not know why but I do not like mixing brands in an Index.

Any Made in USA and made from HSS will service you forever if run it with lube and at the correct speed and feed rate.

I have Made in USA sets from 50 years ago that I still use everyday. You can too,

I went with the mechanics reduced shank version so I could still use them in my 3/8 drills.

I would pick a standard jobber length of standard HSS if its to be the only set and the use is general purpose, but I doubt many on here only have one set.
I have far more metric drills than inch sizes.
