I have been asked many times about the Norseman black and gold bits and also cobalt bits. This is from norseman marketing info.

Magnum™ Drills & Super Premium Cutting Tools

Welcome to the world of Magnum Super Premium twist drills. This page will provide you with the opportunity to review the many features and benefits of Magnum drills and to learn why they are the finest tools available for most drilling applications. These heavy duty drills are recommended for use in tough metal drilling applications and work hardening grades of stainless steel.

Why Choose Magnum™?

Substantially longer cutting life - The nitro-carburized flute has an increased Rockwell hardness.

Cuts harder materials - The flatter point takes a smaller chip. More torque is directed to a smaller area. This allows drilling into materials with hardness of over 30 on the Rockwell "C" scale.

Stops drill walking - The split point design gives accurate starting without the use of a center punch.

Holds tighter hole size - The split point design is self centering. This limits the normal oversize drilling characteristics.

Outstanding quality appearance - The rich amber gold color sets it apart from commodity cutting tools.

Runs cooler, uses less torque - 135° point takes a smaller chip resulting in less heat. Friction is reduced by amber gold surface treatment.

Stops chuck slippage - Flats on drill shanks allow easy positive chuck grip.
(Flats are machined only on Mechanics Length drill bits & Silver & Deming drill bits, not on jobber length drill bits.)

Magnum™ Vs. Cobalt

The Magnum™ drills will substantially outperform cobalt drills in work hardening stainless steel applications. This performance advantage is the result of construction differences between the two types of drills. Cobalt drills, manufactured to Type J NAS 907 specs, have a very thick web. This web is necessary to limit breakage of the brittle cobalt steel. Magnum drills are made of special hi-moly tool steel, which is much tougher than cobalt steel. The web on a Magnum drill can be thinned considerably due to the toughness of the steel. (See Illustration A)

A Magnum drill with its thin web will penetrate the work hardening stainless fast enough to continually cut beneath the chip which is hardening from deformation. This means the drill is cutting softer steel.

The cobalt drill, with its thick web, cannot be fed at a fast enough rate to cut beneath the area which is hardening. As a result the cobalt drill is continually drilling into hardened steel.

That would only help if there was a part number for it. I've looked for such a set in their catalog, doesn't look like they make such a set.

I wish they had a HSS 135 degree, screw machine length, 115 piece set.

I wanted the same and ordered the first three sets listed. I didn't want to deal with the one large case since I never need all 3 sets out at once. I did that since buying a 115 case would cost only $15 if I wanted to go that way after the fact. And I dont.😃 :)

Get with Patrick and tell him you want those 3 and you'll be happy.

I'm going to order, but any chance I can get an education on the HHS vs Cobalt vs HiMoly vs Magnum?

Yeah...

It would be awesome if one set just said "Best seller for an auto mechanic" or for a wood worker, etc.

I don't generally drill anything beyond automotive cast iron/sheet metal and have used cheapo sets from HD for a while. I know I want a nice set - but what angle? What metal type? Any other considerations for which bits to buy?

I love to do research but this one is a real challenge to look up.

In the end, TAKE MY MONEY :D but point me in the right direction otherwise ill continue to buy $10 sets of bits.

magnum is hi moly. cobalt is very hard but brittle and it's used for very hard steel. not needed for most folks. these are all hss and not carbon steel. hope this helps.

Here is a bit more I for from Wikipedia showing the difference between the various HSS.

M2
M2 is molybdenum based high-speed steel in tungsten–molybdenum series. The carbides in it are small and evenly distributed. It has high wear resistance. After heat treatment, its hardness is the same as T1, but its bending strength can reach 4700 MPa, and its toughness and thermo-plasticity are higher than T1 by 50%. It is usually used to manufacture a variety of tools, such as drill bits, taps and reamers. Its decarburization sensitivity is a little bit high.[9]

M36
M36 is similar to M2, but with 8% cobalt added. The addition of cobalt increases heat resistance. M36 is also known as HSSE or HSS-E.

M42
M42 is a molybdenum-series high-speed steel alloy with an additional 8% cobalt. It is widely used in metal manufacturing because of its superior red-hardness as compared to more conventional high-speed steels, allowing for shorter cycle times in production environments due to higher cutting speeds or from the increase in time between tool changes. M42 is also less prone to chipping when used for interrupted cuts and costs less when compared to the same tool made of carbide. Tools made from cobalt-bearing high speed steels can often be identified by the letters HSS-Co.

If you guys have any more questions after reading the previous 2 group buy threads, post them here. We will chime in. Over the years I have learned quite a bit about bit selection based on material, speeds and feeds, use of cutting fluid, drill sharpening.

IPP,

I would recommend this set

Norseman 66820 - $86.00
29 Piece 1/16"-1/2" x 64ths w/3-Flats Hi-Moly 135[DEG] Split Pt Mech. Drill Set

This has three flats that will work great with a hand drill, is 135 degrees with split point for good engagement and less chance of walking, has reduced length bits to get into tighter places and comes in a non metal case that should be great for those that might be hard on equipment.

This is my recommendation as THE BEST SET FOR MECHANICS.

Another option is 57950. This is the same set as the above, but with all the shanks being 3/8". If you drill can handle 1/2" shank then go with the above. If it can't, then this would work. Download the catalog and verify the specs prior to ordering just to make sure everything is correct. They offer so many sets and it can be a bit confusing.

I just ordered a 42031 (14Pc 5/64" - 3/16" x 64ths + 7/32" + 1/4" - 1/2" x 1/16" Burrout™ Drill Set) brad point set, that I would think is a good choice for woodworking.

I also ordered a 66490 (29Pc 1/16"-1/2" x 1/64" Hi-Moly 135° Split Pt B&G Screw Machine Length Drill Set) set for general fab projects around the house.

Patrick seems very friendly, knowledgable, and willing to help.

FYI, if you follow some of the Fastenal links above the pictures they use could be wrong.

I second PT Doc's recommendation of the 66820, for his first two reasons. 3 flats should eliminate any slipping in a hand drill. Split point for easier starting and maybe I won't need a pilot hole where the location isn't critical. Good steel too, so they will last quite awhile before sharpening.

This was my choice in the last group buy :) and this was after reviewing user comments here on the Garage Journal and several other sites. Consensus is these drills are excellent quality and hold up well.

To clarify on the various lengths offered in the drill bits:

When I was looking into what length to get, I used the 1/2" as the point of comparison. I think the results were as follows:

jobber length 6" long
mechanics length 5"
screw machine 4"

For increased rigidity and likely a hole that ends up where you want it, the screw machine length are recommended. Reading up on various machining forums helped me decide this. Having some jobber length drills are needed if you need deeper hole drilling capabilities. But having started with the screw machine and following with the jobber allows me to get better hole placement.

These options along with different drill materials, point angles, shank diameters and storage case types makes the combinations quite high. But its nice to have options. :)

I've been reading some threads about folks buying carbon taps. Please do yourself a favor and buy HSS spiral point taps. These can be used when hand tapping, tapping under power on the drill press or mill or in a hand held drill. Since these shoot the chips forward they work great on through holes. If tapping a blind hole, you can drill deeper and leave an area for the chips to go or just back it out and blow the chips out. If you have a shallow blind hole then the spiral point is not the best option. At that point, use a spiral flute tap and this style will result in the chips coming out like a drill would.

If you need some clarification or have questions, post them here. There are no stupid questions and we all were newbies at one time.

Yes, I will probably invest in this tap and die set next time around, because of its HSS content. Has anyone, however, used the "nitro-carburized" 5 pc. Drill / 5 pc bolt extractor set?

This is just a reminder, the deals ends this Friday at 4:30 est. If you have drills, sets, extractors, carbide burrs that you need, then getting them now will save you some bucks. There will not be another Norseman deal like this in 2014 and not likely in early 2015.

Thanks to Patrick and Doc for making this happen.
