I’m hoping someone can help me out. I just picked up a used north star 459242c air compressor. I’m trying to wire this up and I’m a little bit confused because the wiring diagram on the panel doesn’t seem to match what they may have had set up. My understanding is you have the power to L1 and L2 but it looks like they had a jumper wire going to L3 for some reason. Anyone have any ideas how to hook this up? Please see attached pictures

Without trying to be rude, you're going to need to provide better photos than that, and also a picture of the wiring diagram. We need to be able to clearly see where all the connections are going.

looks like its a 3-phase starter w/ solid state overload relay with phase loss protection. if the motor is single phase, then you need the jumper to go through the overload relay otherwise it will instantly trip
so for example, T2 would go through the overload relay block and connect on top to line 3. motor connects to T1 and T3
so for example, T2 would go through the overload relay block and connect on top to line 3. motor connects to T1 and T3
I don't see a single wire connected to L3 so it hard to understand what you're talking about
You can turn off the phase loss and phase unbalance detection with the dip switches on these siemens overloads.

The ESP200 has switches to disable phase unbalance and phase loss detection. It doesn't make sense they'd leave those on in a single-phase application. Then again, it doesn't make sense they'd even use this particular one considering Siemens makes dedicated single phase versions of the ESP200.
Anyways, after looking at it again, It appears they have completely bypassed the motor overload, as none of the coil wires are running through the ESP200's contacts.

It doesn't even appear to be the same overload (page 14 in the manual) as what is supposed to come with the machine (which makes sense, considering the ESP200 is a ~$600 overload, which is insane on a $2000 compressor).

Thank you for the information. So I figured it all out. As you stated they did bypass the overload circuit. So instead of using L1 and L2 they used L1 and L3. No clue why they did that. So I connected everything up to L1 and L3 and everything works fine except for the bypass. When I connect up the two wires for the overload circuit it trips right away. I just ordered a new esp200 hoping it’s just that that went bad versus something else causing the dryer to go over and trip it.
Also on the compressor side I’m not sure if they replace the cable or the motor because they connected the wire to a smaller wire which then goes through the esp200. I tried removing the jumper wire but then the big wire from the motor was too short. I was thinking about taking the smaller wire off and getting a larger wire and connecting it through as a jumper. It might not matter but figured why not to keep it the same size wire as what is coming from the motor.

Did you check the dip switch settings?
They come factory set for three phase applications. It will trip if it doesn't sense current on all three phases. That can be turned off by simply turning the dip switch off.

Yes, and also be aware that there isn't just one ESP200, there are many different models. I would cancel your order and verify the settings on yours. It's hard to tell but it looks like phase loss and phase unbalance are on. Both need to be off for it to work in this application.
