I need to heat the second floor of my 3 story barn. It's basically one large 600 sq foot room. Walls and ceilings have fiberglass batts but they are undersized (2 x 4 thickness batts in 2 x 6 stud/rafter bays). I could easily add more/thicker batts since the walls are unfinished.

I was planning on this heater and running same off a 40 lb propane bottle. This will only be for occasional use when I'm working out there. Any idea how many hours this heater would run on a 40 lb bottle of propane?

Also anyone have any experience w. this heater ? (Also I am located in northern NJ, typical winter days are 25 to 35 F with some weather in the teens now and then.)

There are about 21,000 btu in a lb of propane. 92,000 in a gallon. I think you will find your 15,000 btu heater to be undersized especially if you intend to turn it on when you go out there. What is the efficiency of this N Tool unit?

I just checked the installation and spec sheet on what is actually an Empire DV-215. Empire is so proud of the product they do not publish an efficiency for it. One of the reviews claims it is 80%, but every DV215 I've ever seen is actually 60-65%. The optional blower is noisy and not particularly effective.
The best that can be said of it is that the unit itself is inexpensive and requires no power. The alternative is a Rinnai EX-22T for your place. Much more dough, but much more comfort, economy and features. You get what you pay for.

That type of heater gets very hot -- I'm not sure of the efficiency. 80% would be 12k.

I can do 1700sf w/ mid 30's K .... but that's in a very well insulated space with maintained temps. I'm in your area

My guess is you will want more. An empty space is going to heat up faster -- same if the floor is insulated.
