What do you do about nosey neighbors? My neighbor is cool, but he tends to poke his head into things at the wrong time I guess. Like I'd prefer the neighbors not know that I'm building another metal building on my property, not that it really matters I guess. I don't think they can go to the city and object to it, but my neighbor strolls up when I'm showing the engineer where I want to put it so he can draw up a drainage plan etc and I'm not good at making stuff up on the fly, so I came out and said it and he's all like what are you using it for, why do you need another one bla bla bla. I mean. I don't care they he chit chats with me when Im not trying to show someone what i want to do but this dude is charging me for his time and he's not out there to talk to the neighbor and he came out twice and was asking us a bunch of questions. Luckily I got all my questions answered still.

Has anybody ever seen a thread where it starts, I live in a great neighborhood with great people and I just like being a ***** to annoy them and do outrageous things?

I'm not saying the OP is this way, but, I wondered this for years.
Two of my four back yard neighbors have immaculately xeriscaped yards. My back yard is sand and weeds. I'm lazy.

I mind my own business and the the only communication they get from me is an occassional wave when they drive by assuming I'm in the mood.

"Hi Jim, we're really tight on time today and this guy charges me by the hour. I can come over later today, but right now we both need to focus on our specific tasks".

Yeah I guess I dropped the ball on this one. I could have been like let me meet with him and see what he has to say and I'll drop by later.

Have you checked the zoning of your property and permitted uses, and also the regulations regarding building permits etc?

I used to be on a development appeal board. Where I live I can have one 120 sq/ft building and one building up to 3000 sq/ft. If i want a third building I have to get a development permit. Your additional might not be allowed. Just because Billy-Bob down the road has one does not mean you can get one.

******* off neighbors, at this point, is not a good strategy.

I have found it's easier to keep them at bay, so every now and then I go out in the driveway with the Shark Vacuum and pretend to vacuum the driveway..

I have good neighbors and I like them. I'm happy when they stop by to see what I'm up to and occasionally I stop by to see what they are up to.

I probably need to send him a text about the other day and just say he was charging me for his time and I didn't want to get stuck chit chatting. That still sounds like I'm an ******* though. Lol

Pine trees grow 1-2ft a year. The best time to plant them as a living fence was about 6yrs ago.

I planted 48 spruce in 2020.

That just tells him it is OK to come by when you don't have someone there

I must be lucky. For the last 40+ years at 3 different places, our neighbors have been friendly and helpful, without being inquisitive or nosey. They're often available to help (and I've been there to help them too) but we don't live in each other's back pocket either.

Tell your contractor to bill the time he talked to your neighbor to him.

Not right he would charge you for that time anyway
Not right he would charge you for that time?

Any time at site is billed time. I work in consulting Engineering, and all my time, including travel, is billable. If I have to go to your location and you want to chit chat, you're paying about $5.50 a minute for that. If you call me about the file, that time gets billed as well. That's industry standard.

I can't fathom why it wouldn't be right for him to charge that time, he's on your site, it's your responsibility to control access.

If the engineer makes a business arrangement with the neighbor to see him about something during your site visit, then that chat time should be charged to the neighbor. However yes, it's totally reasonable for the engineer to charge time on your site to you, whether or not someone else is attempting to waste your time.

If he takes an hour talking to the neighbor then i shouldn't be billed for that time.

Simple and honest work.

If you tell the guy to go away in the first place, then that won't happen.

In my last neighborhood, anytime I had a contractor working on my property I had neighbors stopping by asking for their information and wanting to talk to them. In a couple cases, it was bad enough that I ran interference to make sure they could get the job done quickly.

I guess some people just were never taught at a young age when to interrupt and when not too. Personally I like to keep things quiet until I have a permit in hand before letting the neighbors know what I'm building. You never you know, they could go down to the city and throw a fit and hinder my ability to get a permit. I dont even know if they are going to let me drain the water where I want to and the neighbor already knows what's going on.

Some just want to put there business where it do not belong. some complain, cry, and get you in trouble.

I agree your best bet is to keep as quiet as possible until the project starts. That can be hard to do

Ideally, people would know when not to hang around, but clearly this guy didn't. It isn't the engineer's job to tell a neighbor to go away, it is the landowners. The engineer doesn't know that this guy isn't somehow involved (a father, stakeholder, etc.). Any resulting additional time spent dealing with someone the landowner isn't chasing away is also on the landowner.

did it ever occur to you that your neighbor may be reading everything you write here, in every thread you post in, and that he is the one telling the city he doesn't want your water on the road.

I had a neighbor that would come over anytime I was working on my hot rod truck and tell me I should have done stuff this way or that way. He was having a car built by others, so eventually I made a comment that he should have his builder do that to his. He stopped coming over to tell me how to do things.

They never came out to even look at the property. I had the engineer out there and he said they wouldn't make you put a ditch in when there is already one there.

I have a nosy neighbor who doesn't bug me much but the guy behind me is always making up crazy stories he tells the nosy neighbor when he starts asking questions. I can hardly keep a straight face when the nosy neighbor comes and tells me what the guy is going to be doing.

"Do you think he is really going to start slaughtering pigs?" "He said he has to redo the kitchen because it was a meth house"
There really were heroin addicts in my house before I bought it 25 years ago. There was a tattoo parlor in the little village center down the road, and it turned out he was dealing heroin on the side. They had to eject the addicts, and I had to redo the interior of the house to move in.

After Mr Tattoo Guy OD'ed the addicts in the area just seemed to disappear. You wouldn't think that would be a problem out in the country, but apparently it is. True story; When my wife and I got engaged, she had the house blessed by an Ordained Minister. Her mother is Native American, and she also smudged the house and did a ceremony. It's all good.

On topic, my neighbors aren't that nosy. They are just happy we fixed the place up. I'm thinking a little spackle and some paint, make a crack house what it ain't.

To me... you better have a permit for every aspect of your build... and I would check. First with the city then I would check to see if the contractors I see are licensed. I would do all this without you even knowing. Property values are important to some. Having an un-permitted, un-inspected building on my neighbors property impacts my property values.

They are not nosey... they are concerned for the investment they made living where they are. There are laws and regulations that should be respected. People can't just do "whatever" they like, they may think they can but... They have neighbors... they all need to get along and live together.

Where I am... I'm surrounded by protected land. Technically you need to ask permission to cut down a tree on your own property because it's removal may cause damage to the protected land next door. It's something you learn to live with. Playing nice with your neighbors. Living together.
