This is a serious question / observation I've had reading this thread and several other knife threads and forums:

How much of it is about better quality and usability VS verging on collector or hobby territory?

The idea of getting a better working knife has piqued my interest, but I also don't want to spend a fortune cutting things. The more I delve into the world of knives and EDC, the more I see posts from most people describing multiple high end knives they own and rotate through on a regular basis. There's also limited edition colors and rare finishes. I can stomach the idea of "spend once cry once", but it confuses me that most knife owners have 5+ $200 knives. That to me seems more like a hobby or collection to me.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that - I collect a lot of things. But I don't have room for more expensive collections, so I'm trying to decide if this is an improved tool I'm adding to my tool box, or just another gateway drug to regular spending on shiny things.

I think you are correct in your assessment. No matter the item, there will always be collectors, and some guys take things a little further than others. Watches, pens, cars, tools, whiskey... you name it, there's sure to be someone collecting it and they are willing to spend big money on it. If you have the means and having a different high end knife for every day of the month is your thing, rock on brother.

Personally, I like following along with these types of threads because, while I have little interest in owning expensive exotic rarities, I do appreciate the work and craftsmanship that goes into them. The other reason I like to follow along is that someone might post their high dollar limited edition whatever, and in looking at the manufacturer's website, you might find that they also make less expensive, but still high quality version that you might end up purchasing.

...I prefer having a good knife...just like i prefer having a good pair of boots, a good belt, a quality watch...etc. In almost every case, a cheaper alternative will work almost as well, and a higher priced option could possibly perform the task more efficiently.

I've come to share this line of thinking over the last few years as well. For me, it really comes down to reliability more than anything else. When I used to buy cheap "leather" belts, I replaced them yearly (if not sooner), but have been wearing the same US made Duluth Trading Company belt for the last 5 years without issue. That's at least five fewer instances where I had to deal with a broken belt and making a trip to the store to find a new one. There are certainly diminished returns with any item - spending more doesn't always mean getting more value. But there is certainly value in spending a little more up front on a higher quality item.

I too love my Duluth leather belts. I've had one hold up great for about ten years now and recently picked up another two. I figure I'm set on belts for at least ten years. It is often cheaper to by quality in the long run.

I still keep cheap knives around for really dirty work, just like I keep my cheaper tools around.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that - I collect a lot of things. But I don't have room for more expensive collections, so I'm trying to decide if this is an improved tool I'm adding to my tool box, or just another gateway drug to regular spending on shiny things.

I had a bunch of cheap knives (I'd call most Benchmades cheap) before I jumped up to the $450+ range. My S110V bladed Strider kept an edge approximately 5 times longer than my S30V Benchmade did. Besides that, a nicer knife is a joy to own due to its high quality build.

So to answer your question, the difference between a nice knife and a normal knife is basically the same as the difference between a SO and Craftsman wrench. They both turn bolts adequately, but the more expensive one is a bit better functioning and much better looking.

For the past seventy years, if I have my pants on, there has been a knife in the right front pocket. That has become an anomaly; before I retired, I was the last guy in the office who had a knife. "Need something cut, ask Jack, 'He carries a knife, you know!'"

Over those years, I wouldn't estimate how many knives I've owned. The one thing I do know is none of them cost big bucks. It's not the knife, it's the hand it's in.

Would anyone know where I could order a custom engraved pocket knife? I am looking for one for my Father for fathers day. It really does not have to be for actual fathers day since I will be out of town but at least within the next 3-4 weeks. I would prefer a blade made in the U.S.A and it would be awesome if it was made in Michigan.

Thank You,
Buck will engrave some, but not all of their knives.
Fathers day was two months ago.

I have carried a knife since third grade, started with with an "all the bells and whistles" boy scout knife, complete with a combination compass/magnifying glass on a chain. It cost me an astronomical $1.50 if I remember. By high school i had more or less settled on a three blade stockman pattern, went through a number of them, Sears, Wards, maybe a Case but I'm not sure about the last. Later on after college I had two or three Schrade "Old Timer " barlows, you could get them cheap with a coupon from Topps tobacco. Still lost and broke them by the numbers, so I started buying the cheapest thing on the rack at the hardware store.
FF to later years, a friend gave me a Spyderco for my birthday, don't remember the model, it's up in the woods somewhere where I was using it to cut maple sap tubing. Then my GF got me a leatherman for Christmas, I kept that for a long time then the kids lost it in the hayfield. Got more leathermen (leathermans?), on about my third now. Leatherman needs more than one blade, so I started carrying a second knife, couple of CRKT Red Dogs, Gerber Paraframes, a Similar looking Buck, and finally settled on the Kershaw Scallion. Went through two Kershaws, looking to get another soon, just have trouble holding on to any knife, except the under $10 specials on the card at the checkout counter.

Reformed high end knife collector here...lol.

Carried everything from a Spyderco Stretch Comboedge all the way to a Microtech HALO 5 tanto, full serrated for my EDC. I have a ton of relatively useless opinions about carbide formers in steel and blade geometry. Only big brands I never dropped coin on were Reeve and Hinderer.

Opinel No. 10 hasn't been kicked out of my pocket for a long time now, Spyderco Military and Stretch 2 serrated seem to fight for pocket space.

Considering grabbing a Rockstead from a local retailer, far better value per dollar than the majority of custom makers.

When they get production running on them again, I'd really like a Grimsmo Rask. Norsemans are cool too but I like the classic look they have with the Rask. Just hard to justify almost a grand for a pocket knife.

The brothers Grimsmo are a cool bunch, local to me. I've gotten their email for a chance to purchase a few times now. They had a huge secondary market bubble on the Norseman and Rask a few years back, watched anything with their mark go for $1500 plus (back when they charged $5xx for a knife....)

You can never go wrong with a real Swiss Army Knife from Victorinox. It’s a timeless gift. They will laser engrave.

Opinel no.6 for me.

It's really light weight compared to the Case that it replaced and not as flimsy as it seemed when I first got it.

I too have had a knife in my pocket every single day since I was a tween. Whether jeans on the weekend or slacks in the office. I've carried a lot of different things over the years from very common manufacturers to cottage knife makers. Currently, I have a Benchmade Bugout with carbon scales. Nice and light, love the blade shape.

I have a Case swayback pattern and it was an absolute ******* to put a real edge on. The Opinel is buttery to sharpen by comparison.

As for percieved durability....people somehow got it in their minds they need some 1/4" stock, sabre grind framelock folder for cutting Amazon packages and loose threads. Secondary bevels taller than an Opinel blade is thick...silly.

My three. Not cheap, but effective- and more importantly, capable. A Dionaldo Weo, Emerson Persian, and a Sayoc Rat. Two of the three I’ve carried for more than a decade.

I am a serious knife guy.
Been carrying a slipjoint folder of some kind in my pocket for over 50 years.
These days if you can find a Great Eastern Cutlery knife of any pattern you will be happy.
GEC is the top of the line American made slip joint folder selling for reasonable prices new if you can get one and premium secondary market prices, I have many of the older Queen, Schatt & Morgan, Remington, Shrade, and Robeson knives also but the GEC knives are truly exceptional.

Cant go wrong with any of the newer "tactical" style folding knives from Benchmade, Spyderco and many others with the modern locking systems, pocket clips and fast opening systems, I have many of them that are in my rotation also.

I've carried a Swiss Army knife of one model or another since the early 70's. If I need something a little bigger, a Spyderco Delica or Tenacious fills the gap.

My daily carry is a Kershaw knife (third knife below, in the first two pictures).

Though I do have a few knives that I have in my small humble collection, here are just a few.

Here are just a few of them (I've got a few more) nothing high-end or exclusive shown here........just basic knives that come in handy when needed.

I received a Gerber Gator Semi-Serrated as an Eagle Scout gift from my Troop almost 20years ago. It doesn't see daily carry, but if I go out in the woods hunting or camping it is for sure in my pack.

Daily carry is a Case Trapper lock with Walnut handles.

My brother is a detective, but went the opposite way. He started out carrying Spyderco but soon switched to whatever was the cheapest he could find and buying multiples.

His reasoning was that you don't need a great knife for 99.79% of tasks, but every few months you'd have to cut something you really don't care to get the knife back. You toss it and grab a new one out of the drawer when you get back.
If I bought an expensive knife it's almost guaranteed I would lose it before it needed to be sharpened the first time.

Had a brand new Bucklite that I lost in the San Marcos River back in '98. No it wasn't expensive but still -
Alcohol was involved in that one.

Nice bunch of knives!

I bought my first GEC in '09. I've got a baker's dozen and I like them a lot--one of them is usually in my pocket every day. But I've given up on trying to get any more. The frenzy around a new release is silly. They literally sell out in seconds and though they're nice they aren't worth what they bring on the secondary market.

My EDC is a little Kershaw Cryo I bought used off eBay for $25. Couldn't be happier.
My brother got me one just like that a couple years ago. I haven’t sharpened it yet and its still fairly sharp.

I've been carrying nothing but Spydercos since the very first model came out. The only exception is a small buck folder for office use. They've gotten more expensive as I got older. I believe the first one was around $20. The one I carry today was $160.

I've got way too many "not cheap knives" and I don't consider myself a collector. I guess I am a knife nut but not as crazy as other knife nuts. Too much work to post all my knives here. 😀

Buy a real knife from a company specialized in knife making / cutlery.
I haven't been on a Snap-on truck in years so not sure which ones you are talking about. I have 2 Snap-on knives, both are made by quality brands, well technically the same company. One is a Kershaw, made in Japan. The other is an anniversary knife made by Zero Tolerance which is a good brand. It was given to me for Christams by my lil brother. I never carry it though cause it's not my style & I have plenty of others to carry/use. I can never sell it though.

The parent company of both Kershaw & Zero Tolerance is KAI, a Japanese cutlery company. They make some what higher end kitchen cutlery & scissors. Kershaw is the lower end pocket knife brand, most use cheaper grades blade steels for affordability, many are made in China but some are made in the USA. Zero Tolerance is their higher end pocket knife brand, quality blade steels, & all are made in the USA as far as I'm aware.

Usually I grab one of these that are currently in my knife drawer, every few months I rotate the knives in the drawer with others I have.

I have a knife problem

You, sir, have issues! But I then again I do also. Nice collection!

But at least you know. I always say, "if you know you have an problem, then it's not a problem". And especially if you're around others who share the same problem. That's why I'm/we are here on GJ. 😆

I think this thread has devolved to CHEAP knives. If the knife costs less than $100 (minimum) it doesn't belong here.
Nah, some might think a cheap knife is something that sells on the counters of convenience stores for less than $10.00. Some, like me, might consider a $30.00 knife cheap. I carry a Kershaw Corral Creek Sheepsfoot every day at work. I think I paid around $30.00 for it a few years back. Outside of work, I either have a Buck 301 Stockman or a Case CA203 Stockman on me. Those run in the $60 to $65 range and I don't consider them cheap. I have others, some cost more, but most cost less, I don't ever use them so they don't count. They sure aren't high end, but they will do everything I need them to. I doubt I would ever consider spending $100 on a knife where the OP stated the upper end for him is $250 to $300.
