Most chop strand mat fiberglass is incompatible with epoxies. They are held together by a binder and it dissolves with the styrene in the polyester resin that is absent in epoxy.

So for epoxy you have E glass twill weave if you don't want exotic. Its while there are some slight variations of warp vs fill yarns that can help in drapabilty over complex shapes for most parts a standard weave is fine. Use 4 or 6 oz weight fabric for good surface finish or very light lay ups. 8 to 12 oz glass for building up layers. Heavy Roving isn't usually used with epoxy

S glass will give strength to weight boost for a corresponding cost. Its usually only used in aerospace although many places would be better served using S glass on a wet layup vs carbon fiber but it doesn't look as cool. Carbon fibers advantages of strength to weight is hard to achieve unless resin infusion or prepreg is used.

No discussion on bi-axial and tri-axial ? (I learned the hard way that 1708 does not like "edges".)

Yes, what are you building. 1708 usually isn’t used with epoxy as it has a layer of chop strand mat and is very heavy. Even 1700 without the csm is heavy and takes a lot of epoxy and therefore very expensive.

They are usually used for solid molded boat hulls and heavy structural layups.

Watch this guy's videos... best I've found. Zero affiliation, he provides more infor and how to's than anyone I've found searching.

Firebrick explained it very well.

One additional "cloth" to consider using is fiberglass tape, especially for long thin layups (I use 2" or 4" width tape). I also like using it along the edge of a project, because the sewn edges of the tape are so clean/straight/thick. But a scissors-cut edge of sheet fabric will give you lower edge (less thick) if that's what you want.

Re-enforcing partially rotted boat stringers. (The boat is not worth a complete floor removal and replacing the stringers !)

I did not realize 1708 had a mat backing. Probably should have used >12 oz twill. (Because of the location, more than 1 layer was impossible.)

Yes, this was a hack job !

For that a tape like RickP suggested would be best.
